OH FFS can someone please help this idiot run my psp games off of my mem stick?

I've got v4.01 on my psp and I'm trying to install this stupid ass 4.01 M33 but damn it I don't know how.  There are even directions, yet when I follow them, my psp just tells me that it can't run the update.  That same page has a link to more detailed directions that tell me I need to have 3.52 M33-3 installed first but fuck me if I know how or even what that means.  I have a program called umddump that lets me rip my games, but I need custom firmware before I can play them.  PLEASE someone help me out before I launch this shitbastard system into the fucking wall.

you need to downgrade to 3.52m33 as instructed.

If you have 3.71 do you stil have to downgrade to 3.52 first?
