What games are you buying in the Fall?
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:24:30 AM »
I'm literally going to be spending over $1000 on videogames this Fall.  Here's my list from September to December:

Xbox 360 (I buy all multi-platform games on 360 since they perform better on it 99% of the time, as well as friend invites and Xbox Live):

LEGO Batman - September 1
Infinite Undiscovery - September 1
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise - September 5
NBA Live '09 - September 23
Fable 2 - October
Fallout 3 - October
Far Cry 2 - October
FIFA '09 - October
Midnight Club LA - October
Project Origin - October
Saint's Row 2 - October
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - November
Call of Duty: World at War - November
Left 4 Dead - November
Mirror's Edge - November
Gears of War 2 - November
Tomb Raider Underworld - November

PS3
Resistance 2 - November
LittleBigPlanet - October

XBLA / PSN:

Castle Crashers
Braid
Fat Princess
Lode Runner
R.B.I. Baseball (!!!!!!!!!)
SF2 HD
Uno Rush
Age of Booty

Maybes:
Tiberium - September 2 (looks and sounds good with the squad elements, but need reviews)
NHL '09 - September 9 (don't really follow hockey but what I played of '08 was the best hockey game ever)
Just Cause 2 - September 23
Dead Space (gonna be awesome but is a ~10-12 hour single-player game worth the $60 when there's so many other games to buy?)
Prince of Persia (see above)

I know people like to call Holiday '07 the best ever but, imo, '08 kills it.  Yes there was Halo 3, Mass Effect and Mario Galaxy last year but looking at it as a whole, '08 blows '07 away.  The sheer number of great games is insane.

PS3
Resistance 2
MotorStorm 2
Dead Space
Mirror's Edge

PC
Project Origin

360
Gears of War 2 (pending news on a PC version)
Fable 2 (Same as above)

Pretty light on the wallet, but it's all quality stuff. Q1 and Q2 of 2009 are starting to look jut as good, if not better.

Guarantees:

Dead Space (360)
Project Origin (PC)
L4D (PC)
Wrath of the Lich King (PC)

Then who knows. I'll probably try to pick up at least SOMETHING for the PS3. If Dead Space is comparable on all platforms I'll grab that for PS3 instead.

edit: Is RA3 Holiday 08? Definitely that too, PC natch.

Rock Band 2 w/ guitar
ION drum kit
Guitar Hero: World Tour w/ guitar
Lips
XBLA shit
Renting everything else simply because I play through most games once and never touch them again.

Toy plastic instruments own my soul. :-\  At least I can learn the real drums with the ION kit.

Oh shit, I forgot about a 120 gig HDD for 360 game installs.  Fuck Microsoft and their expensive ass proprietary objects.

Those are all the things I was going to buy until I saw them listed out like that.  I'm going to have to cut back.

I'll probably get rid of things like Siren and the Naruto 360 game, but other than a few things, I probably am going to buy all those.

I just noticed I listed Rock Band twice.  So that is $60 saved right there.

There is no way I'm not buying Mirror's Edge.  I adore everything about that game despite not playing it yet.  Naruto on PS3 is awesome and the demo was great.  The Star Wars game looks genuinely good, and I'm not even a Star Wars fan.  Prince of Persia and Dead Space both look great.

As for Naruto 360  and Tales, I played the first games and enjoyed them enough.  I cut out Vesperia already.  I don't know.  And Spider-Man Web of shadows looks awesome.  I should have kept that as something I would consider when I see more content of it.

In general the reason why I don't rent games too much is because I usually end up replaying them.  I genuinely enjoy playing video games.  If I like a game, I will probably play it again.  I have returned games in the past, so if I played and didn't like them, I would do that.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. C.L.E.A.R. S.K.I.E.S.

Not really a fall game though, unless they delayed it.

I'm going by whatever IGN listed.

I'd definitely get Siren. It's only 40 bucks and I'm a horror whore. Or you can just buy the first chunk for 10 bucks and if you hate it...you're only out 10 bucks.

plus it's this week, so it's in a bit of a dryspell. I'm gradually saving money though as time goes by. Was interested in Saints row 2 and Mercs 2, but I've decided that i pretty much hate non superpower sandbox games now. not buying too human anymore, and i'm moving a lot of stuff like dead space and mirror's edge to rent-- which is painful, because those games look so fucking rad and I want to keep them.

I know what I'll do.

I'll rent em and then buy them from gamefly next summer. Last winter's hits are like 11 dollars on Gamefly.

Gamefly :bow2

the only winner in the console war

Ps i still think force unleashed looks shitty and i will be renting it. buying tales is supporting terrorism.

I dunno, I'm big on renting games now.  $63 for a 8 to 12 hour experience isn't worth it for me.  I don't use Gamefly... I just go to Blockbuster and give them the 8 bucks.  They have new games really quick and have good stock depending on the game.  Mirror's Edge, Dead Space... those are rentals, imo, unless there's some added replayability we don't know about yet (tons of unlockables, some other modes, etc.).  There's too many great games coming out this Fall that I can't afford to blow 60 bucks on a one weekend experience.

Force Unleashed looks like God of War with force powers.

I am really just hoping there are demos for a lot of these games.  The Too Human demo helped me make up my mind on not buying it.

And I might have to learn more about Gamefly.  Still, games like Mirror's Edge are things I know I want to keep.  That game is totally something you want to try and make Speed Runs for.

If you buy a lot of games, GameFly might ultimately be cheaper for you. You can buy new games at discounted rates (~40ish dollars) and cheaper if you are a long term member.

OK, I think this is more reasonable.  Everything that I know will have a demo is gone (only those I was on the edge about) and I cut out the fat all around.

PS3:
Soulcalibur IV
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
LittleBigPlanet
Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm
Mirror's Edge
Resistance 2
Valkyria
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Wipeout HD
Bionic Commando

360:
Dead Space
Prince of Persia
Infinite Undiscovery
Rock Band 2 (Game only)
Fable 2
Banjo and Kazooie Nuts and Bolts
Gears of War 2

PC:
Fallout 3
Left 4 Dead
STALKER Clear Sky
Crysis Warhead
Project Origin

DS:
Tecmo Bowl Kickoff
Chrono Trigger DS
Castlevania Order of Ecclesia

PSP:
Yumi's Odd Odyssey

Wii:
Samba De Amigo
Wario Land Shake It

Far more reasonable.

Forgot MM9.  Either PS3 depending on extra features or Wii.

Resistance 2 multiplayer is nothing like it was in the first game.  It actually has two separate kinds of multiplayer.  First is an 8 player co-op campaign where you pick a class and can level up.  Second is a 60 person battle where the game puts you in a squad with 4 other guys and you are given separate objectives from the rest of your team.  Then there is the normal stuff like Death Match and all those.

Dude that's like 80 000 dollars. Be more picky for your own good.

I already have.  I still am trying to think about what else to cut down.  I mean, I'm not concerned about the money.  I am just worrying about time at this point.

Those are still likely to change depending on if they turn out better on 360 or not, but it is a similar situation that Burnout Paradise had.  At least Force Unleashed is leading on PS3, and while Mirror's Edge hasn't been confirmed as PS3 lead, every time they show the game it is on PS3.  Then again, that could be due to it using Sixaxis at times.

Oh, and I also have a beefy PC, but I am still getting Mirror's Edge for consoles.  This is maybe one of the few times I will ever do that.

Sixaxis usage in Mirror's Edge actually sounds sort of cool, hopefully they do it well though. And keep it optional, of course.

Besides, I like to be able to hear the game audio over the sound of the console.

That is actually why I will be getting it for the PS3 instead of PC.  I actually don't hate the sixaxis control and it sounds like they are doing interesting things with it.

Considering I've bought 4-5 games this year thus far, the next six months are insane.

360
Dead Space
Prince of Persia
Tomb Raider Underworld
Fable 2
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Mirror's Edge
Gears of War 2

Maybes:
Project Origin
Saints Row 2
Banjo Kazooie 3
Just Cause 2
A JRPG if they don't have annoying characters

Wii
Fatal Fucking Frame 4
Maybe that SimCity game.

If I get a PS3
Siren
Resistance 2

I was more interested in Prince of Persia before I saw that gameplay movie over at Blim's site.  I've got nothing against the actual mechanics of it all but as soon as I heard the main character speak I was completely let down.  It's fucking Nathan Drake climbing walls and cracking jokes....ugh.  I was hoping for more of a ethereal/Team ICO type game like the trailer was somewhat implying.

I know I sound like some GAFaggot about this, but it really was disappointing.

He talks? do you have a link to the video where he does.  nvm, found it.

This voice acting really sticks out.  Even the grunts seem like a bit much.

I haven't heard him talking, although I haven't played Uncharted so maybe it won't be so jarring for me (it's the same voice actor is it?)

I don't think I want a link to a video though, I'll live in blissful ignorance for now.

Well, attitude certainly is nothing new to PoP. Is it light-hearted, or rough 'n tough? I thought it worked pretty well in Uncharted, but then that was supposed to be light hearted action.

It is heavy handed sarcasm.
