there's actually a very good book on the making of 2001 which goes into a lot of detail about the film

i would suggest that if you are seriously interested in trying to get what Kubrick was doing independent of if you think he succeeded as a filmmaker, that this book would really be helpful in that regard.  as a fan it gave me new ways of approaching the film, as a detractor i think it may provide a degree of insight which may click with you in a way your reading of the film does not.

It didn't tie together until someone who had read the book told me what was going on. That's a sign of a shitty film, when the story doesnt make any sense to people who watch the movie. That scene is pure beauty. Did you watch 2001 with the lights off an on a big screen? It is a sight to see. That scene is for nothing more than pure visual and auditory  bukkake.

No. It directed them to a place where they can evolve without the musings of machines. By themselves. The moon is hardly far away from the Earth. You think they'd just evolve while on the moon while resorting to their machines? That's the whole point. Evolving so they don't have to rely on machines to live in space.

So basically the maguffin of the film is inconsistent on how it works. That makes sense and is completely ok to do in a story.

no. it's not inconsistent. the movie splatters various visuals clues as to humans current state over and over. They learned to carve weapons from bones, use utensils, make fire. Now they're struggling just to piss in outer space, they became, once again monkeys. The first part sets the tone for the rest of the movie: man's need to evolve. The second half shows they suck at living in space and the need to step it up to the final evolutionary form in order to live in space.
