Got Warhawk a few days ago

And it's pretty awesome, now that it doesn't freeze all the damned time. Great controls, plenty of games to choose from (as opposed to, say, UT3 for PS3) and a generally good time. Don't have any of the map packs so I'm stuck with the beta levels, should have packed more into the actual game given that it's purely a multiplayer game.

God damn though, this is some difficult shit. I'm worried that between being shot down seconds after take-off and being killed before I even get into the air, I'll never really have a chance to get the hang of the game. Is there any way to check for servers based on experience/skill level?

I love this game :D

But I am fucking terrible in the warhawks.  I've never killed anyone in those damn thing :(

I'm best on foot and with the assault rifle

I'd like to be able to use the motion control here, because it actually does give you a serious advantage in terms of precision fire, especially in hover mode. But, it's not for me. Hell, even the Pro flight controls are out of my reach right now. I may have to load up some local games just to practice flying. :(

I can see this being pretty awesome if you get a good team thing going. So far though, even in TDM, it's been every man for himself. I had one guy actually asking for assistance, although failing to communicate that the whole surrounding area was air-mined. Still, that's the closest to a team moment I've experienced in the game so far.

i need a headset so I can communicate.  I've been in a few 16 vs 16 battles that were fucking intense and fun.

and yeah, I am horrible with the motion controls.  how does it give you a precision advantage?

you can steer ship with motion controls and actually aim the crosshair with analog stick.  otherwise you steer ship with analog stick and don't have control over crosshair.

which means that you potentially have more control if you use motion controls.

personally i do better with motion controls disabled.

I feel the on foot aiming is a bit loose, but other than that I really enjoyed it, especially the sense of scale.

But again the fact you get the shit shot out of you as soon as you take off really sucks. I spent my first week playing on low pop servers so I could get the hang of things. It didn't make much difference though :(

On foot shooting has heavy auto aim, so I don't have trouble with it.  Sniping is a bit hard.

I've noticed that keeping flight control normal but turning on motion controls for hover makes for a good mix of controllable fighter and precision gunship. Still getting blasted to bits though, but at least I've pulled off a couple of nice bombing runs now.

Is the DLC worth the $12?

If not, I'm sticking to Quake Wars.

The game obviously doesn't look like that, in terms of content. It looks real good though, very clean, and there's a surprising amount of detail to things. It's heavily stylized though, which may not appeal to everyone.

This was one of my biggest complaints.  Even in team-oriented modes like CTF, there is just no teamwork at all.  It always feels like everyone is doing their own thing which pretty much killed the experience for me.

I'd be up for that.

Someone tell me - do I need to manually go into the settings and turn on my bluetooth headset every time I turn the PS3 on?

I don't have to do that, so who knows.

And I will be up for some evilbore games of this.

only if you have re-synched your headset with another device.

Alright. So if I just press the button to turn it on, and the PS3 is on, I can just talk?

Every time I've tested it I've gotten no response, but then again no one else was talking anyway.

My in-air time record is just under a minute without being shot down.  :-[

I mostly play late at night (EST)

Make sure it's on before you enter the game.

Actually managed to get into a few really good games last night. Hell, we even staged a somewhat coordinated attack, which of course failed due to my incompetence, but hey. When the game clicks, it's pretty awesome; Warhawks swooping in (and taken out by AA guns), tanks rolling into bases, goofy looking firefights between ground troops, it all feels both bombastic and lighthearted. The game seems to be pretty well populated too, although it could probably use a better matchmaking system.

Are there any new weapons in the DLC? I feel that the game is missing some sort of "WMD," like a MOAB or carpet bomb for the Warhawk.

This thing?

I think I'll have to pick up the DLC; I like snowy landscapes, that was one thing I wished for pretty vocally during the beta.

In the base game, this is definitely my favorite map. It has the best sense of scale, and plenty of places to run and hide  :-[

It actually looks better than that while playing, though you won't see THAT many ships on screen.  That shot was first shown when the game was still a single player experience, however.  They showed off realtime demos with tons of ships on screen (AI controlled), but that doesn't exist in the end as the game is single player only.

I thought Warhawk looks nicer than Quake Wars (PC), however.

The seamlessness really sells it too. Get into a Warhawk, take to the skies, boost to the other side of the map and land in a flag zone, take off in a tank, blow up some jeeps, find another plane and take to the skies again. All within 1 minute. The smooth draw-in and generally awesome draw distance also helps in giving it a great sense of scale. I was pretty skeptical of the style of the game before playing it, but it's a smart look.

Now if I could only become good at the game. The only thing worse than having no communication on your team is fighting against a team with great communication.  :-\

Ha, my kid likes the game, or at least she likes taking the Warhawk really high up in the sky and then bring it straight into the ground for a fiery crash. Motion controls for the win, for 3-year olds.

Yeah, Sony needs to sort this microphone stuff out already.  It is annoying that almost no one talks in games.

The microphone works well for me. Or are you talking about the general lack of microphones among PS3 owners? Hopefully they bundle microphones with every multi-player heavy first party game from here on. Or hey, throw one in with the actual PS3 hardware.

Not saying that communication would make any better, or necessarily lead to better teamwork, but it's pretty ridiculous when we can't score a flag point between 16 of us. At least being able to ask for escort or something, that'd help.

Lack of microphones within the userbase.  Sony really messed up on that one and should have included some solution in the PS3 itself.  Hopefully everyone buys SOCOM and gets the official headset that comes with that, but it just sucks to see the majority of people in a game without headsets.   I think they could have even made some cheap solution that plugged into the mini usb slot on the top of the controller.

COD4 seems to be the odd one out though; those games are chatty as hell, to the point where I almost feel like I'm back in MechAssault 1 for Xbox. I think people just don't bother turning on the mics they own. But yep, it should be bundled by now. It's weird too, seeing as how they seem to be really pushing the online gaming stuff this generation with everything from Resistance to MAG, yet simply dropping a BT or even USB headset into the PS3 package seems to be an outrageous idea.

I'm thinking the PS3 business would probably be better off without the executive Japan branch at this point.  :-\
