Quote
However, one possible explanation for the silence is that the game’s blisteringly fast 60 frames a second refresh rate coupled with the strobing background scenery and constant bobbing of the craft is causing electrical disturbances in people suffering from epilepsy.   Certainly games of this ilk have been known to cause motion sickness, but the high-tec imagery used in WipEout HD and the flashing lights might well be adding up to more serious issues, and does go some way to back up what Reeves said last week.

afaik this theory originates in some comment on kotaku -- hints from gaf journalists 'in the know' don't really comport with it

do you really believe the netcode crap though? don't the wipeout games on PSP have online play? plus, liverpool isn't japanese. they should know how to set up an online racer. even mario kart has online.

I knew it, Wipeout HD is too good for this world -_-

If it is a bug (and not a single one either), it would probably be network related, but honestly I just don't think the game is finished.

Woah woah woah, "game delayed due to unfinishedness"? Well, okay there, Occam.

Um, what

Throw up a warning screen, a warning banner upon download at the PS store, and include an option to turn off all effects.

On the other hand how hard is it to finish a game that's made up entirely of ported tracks?

Trophies. Although I get the feeling (based on some comments a long time ago) that Wipeout HD may not actually make it out, in this form. Word was that the PSN iteration was not a safe bet, and that it might instead be folded into a "real" Wipeout.

Whatever, I just fucking want it. Even if its only a couple of tracks, and only SP. This is waiting indeed.

sony europe guy on another forum:

"i played wipeout hd at work today...its pretty much complete. My asumption to why they chose not to show at at this years E3 is probably because its meant to be out (or very soon) and didnt include it in the schedule. The article about it being delayed for "technical" reasons is rather .. shall we say... misleading. The real reason behind it is more hilarious and in a good way. I wish i could say more! but i will say theres nothing wrong with the development of the game at all so dont worry about it ;)"

don't know if epilepsy would agree with "in a good way," but the quote is relevant anyway.  take it or leave it.

I'd love Wipeout a lot more if I knew how to play it.

The Wipeout games on the PSP are fuking gorgeous for portable games but they are frustrating as hell.

I fucking love how GAFFers can plug and praise this shitty site, while decent sites like joystiq  and others get the shaft.

Epilepsy DID stop thousands of Japanese children from watching Pokemon though.

"So half the team quit 3 months ago, we can't finish this stupid game, what will we do....?"

"Let's say it went gold, then pull it for some spurious reason, delay it 6 months or so... then just never release it.  :shh"

Exactly what does an epilepsy test consist of? Do they sit an epileptic in front of the game and see what happens?

apparently there was a recent british controversy about epilepsy and games, which got as far as parliament: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-499816/Mother-fights-regulate-games-son-develops-epilepsy.html

a quick google search didn't turn up evidence of legislation, but this would explain why sony reps referenced regional issues in their e3 statements about the game. i'm now quite convinced that this is the explanation -- probably the newness of these standards contributes to the uncertainty about the game...its developers might not know exactly how to make it comply

So release it only in certain regions like the rest of PSN

somebody english on gaf says that there hasn't been any legislation -- so i think this is less a matter of the game failing some formal test than a fear in sony's uk branch that this flashy, strobey game will give somebody an epileptic seizure and result in a pr nightmare. the trouble with epilepsy warning screens is of course that many young epileptics don't know they're epileptic.

this really looks like the key to all this nonsense: it explains sony's weird reticence and uncertainty, neither of which are typical of an ordinary delay, as well as the weird hints of regional disagreement. the prospect that admiralviscen brings up is key: they can't very well say 'we're worried about a british epilepsy controversy, but those of you in parts of the world where epilepsy and games haven't been in the news can go ahead and play it -- you're less of a pr risk.'

my knowledge of the daily mail is limited to a smiths lyric about prince charles and transvestism, but surely they don't go around inventing mothers with epileptic sons or parliamentary hearings

keep in mind that journalists have played near-complete builds. the network code theory remains plausible, even if it doesn't explain things nearly as well, but theories of performance issues or a nonexistent game are not plausible -- are lazy cynicism as distinguished from the good kind

I'm really digging the music in this video. Now that I own a PS3, this is definitely something that's on my radar, sucks it keeps getting delayed.
