I'll have to read the Cutthroat Island review. I used to like Cutthroat Island, until Pirates of the Caribbean came out anyway and did the whole big-budget pirate blockbuster a million times better. The soundtrack though, especially that opening credit music, is amazing.

It's pretty interesting that the things Mignola wanted cut out of both films are probably the best scenes in them - and he acknowledges that.
