Hirai confirms Home's vaporware status

Speaking to MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment global president Kaz Hirai has said it doesn't matter when exactly Home - the PS3's virtual community - launches, so long as it offers the very best service to gamers around the world.

"I'd much rather make sure we take the time to have a great service rather than rush something into the market - only for consumers to say: "This is not enough for me." I want to avoid that," said Hirai. "If we have the right service, it doesn't matter when we launch - so long as it's in a reasonable timeframe."

He continued: "Whether our competitors decide to follow what we've done with Home or not follow us, that's up to them. Given the fact that I've delayed the launch of Home twice - for which I've apologised - I think I've done it for a very good reason, and that's because I want to bring the very best service possible to consumers around the world.

What's a "reasonable timeframe" for a 10-year life cycle console?

Ah shit...wrong side.  :'(

This is more fitting than putting it into Gaming Discussion.

The whole concept of Home is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged when you consider that 95% of the people on PSN are going to be dudes.

and yet, 57% of them will probably make their Home avatars into Females.

Also, as TVC stated, it does seem fitting that the thread was over on the General Board :3. I love how Hirai talks about Home likes its worth the wait. Keep waiting guys! It may be another year, but keep waiting!

That CD cover looks like someone giving Home the finger.

I like it.

I don't get why.  I don't think anyone will look at Home and think "wow, I'm gonna spend $400 to walk around in a virtual house!"...but then again, people are stupid enough to think "wow, I'm gonna spend $250 to wave my hands around!"

I am happy about home because all the features will also be accessible outside of the Secondlife stuff.

vaporware now?  if you follow the source, he says it's still planned to go public beta this fall.  nothing's changed with these comments.  i believe they've compared it to gmail's "beta"

Home's non-game status has also been confirmed.
who was stupid enough to think Home was ever supposed to be a game?  it's a service.

He's right in saying that it doesn't matter when Home launches.

what part are you confused about?  yeah, gmail's been in public 'beta' status for a long time.  Home's fall beta will supposedly be similar, in that it's basically the public launch but will carry the 'beta' tag for a long time as they implement changes.

this was said at the beginning of june and the link in this thread doesn't change anything because the beta is still on for the fall:
Quote
Susan Panico, senior director of PSN, spoke to Wired about the availability of Home. It will be an "open, working beta." According to Panico, the "rollout will be similar to Gmail." Finally, it will be available this year.

Didn't Gmail take over a year to get rid of the registration codes?
