Just don't come to shows by bands I like, and ESPECIALLY don't do it in a tiny club.  I'm not some indifferent indie kid - I like to get up in front of the stage and show my appreciation for the band I came to see. But I don't like getting smashed up against the stage or elbowed by drunk fucktards who think they have to throw their body weight around to have a good time. Go play football, for crying out loud.

moshing used to be cool and fun - people jumping around, bumping into each other, and having a high energy good time - but recently it seems to have developed into people hurling themselves against each other as hard as fucking possible in an attempt to injure themselves and others. it's fucking disastrous and should be a misdemeanor

A lot of moshers lack self control. I know the type, YOU KNOW THE TYPE. They mosh to anything. They'd mosh at a Seals & Crofts concert. Know when to mosh and when not to.

I still find it all rather dumb, but maybe it has some tribal quality at its core, but often it just seems like roid rage ballet.

I like a good volume where it's loud but not so loud that it loses definition.

I take earplugs though, just in case.  I learned my lesson years ago at a Yngwie concert.  It was so insanely loud that I couldn't hear his his high notes at all - all I could hear was my eardrums flubbering back and forth.  It sounded like someone blowing a raspberry.

A friend of mine went to a hearing specialist after and was informed he'd lost a tiny bit of his hearing.  Fuck that.

Fuck that, I saw Manowar in Philly in 2005 before I knew anything about Manowar. I had the misfortune of standing in the front row right in front of their speaker setup. That's around 127dB blasting straight into my ears from about 4 feet away.

Needless to say, I've never quite heard things the same way since.

I always try to remember to take earplugs.  The amount of hearing loss my dad has just from power tool usage makes me want to keep what's left of mine. I've been to enough concerts without them, anyway.

Gratuitous moshing is what got me to start this thread. I went to see Boris last night (they're a Japanese drone/psychedelic/shoegaze band).  Apparently their labelmates in the US are hardcore/death metal/whatever acts, so thanks to the opening acts the show drew a lot of those types, hence the moshpit during Boris' set.

Last time I ran into this, it was at a Les Claypool concert. And I mean, sure, Primus and moshing went hand in hand, but Primus is basically done, and Claypool's current material is about as far as I can imagine from what should incite moshing.

I don't go to Warped tour, hardcore shows, punk shows, metal shows, whatever, because I know what to expect from them. But some people will take any excuse to mosh.

When I saw the Maiden / Ozzy (or was it Sabbath?) Ozzfest a few years back, a bunch of dumbfucks tried moshing to Maiden. They were quickly shut the fuck down by the sensible metalheads at the show. Fuck that moshpit noise. Go to a hardcore show an be a dumbfuck there. Don't ruin my Iron Maiden experience.

Hell, when I was a Magic Circle Festival a few weeks ago, some guys tried starting a moshpit and the people in front of them belittled into submission with their fists until they cut the shit out.
