EB computer geeks, needing halp pls
« on: July 27, 2008, 04:53:49 PM »
I don't know if I've made this thread before, but I don't wanna bother searching to make sure.

Anyhoo, it's like this. For a good few months, my computer suddenly stopped working, possibly due to it not being braced with anything in the car and banging around all over the trunk when I was moving. So now it won't turn on. Well, it WILL turn on, but it won't load to windows, and I get a bunch of beeping sounds. I checked Emachines beep codes site, and unfortunately, it didnt' give me anything definitive. Said it could either be the RAM, the video card or the Motherboard (gee, thanks assholes!).

But at this point, I don't care too much about getting my computer working, since I'm supposed to be getting a new Laptop from my aunt that's like twice as better or something. However, what I would like to do is copy a good chunk of the files on my hard drive onto some DVDs or a flash drive. So, now my question is, how do I go about doing that?

sorry i r not good with compooter  :'(

just buy a usb 2.0 external 3.5" hd case, pull the old drive, and stick it in the case. voila! all yer old files for browsing when you get yer new rig.

Find a friend who is good with computers and offer him a oldie-but-goodie PS2 game, a six pack of  beer, and a pizza if he'll come over and fix your computer, the problem is probably a loose card or cable and easily fixed with an hour or two tops of messing around. Then you have a laptop and a desktop computer.

Barring that, do what prole says.

Is that all there is to it? I don't have to worry about making sure it's a compatible model or with the right OS or
anything like that?

Unless you are some sort of linux queer then there won't be any problems-even a Mac can read the windows-based filesystems at this point.

Oh, awesome! This saved me a lot of frustration. Drinky saves the day again. If there was a hugging emoticon, I'd use it, but I suppose this rape emoticon will have to do. :hump

Thanks to you also, Frag. :)

well, if the drive has wide grey ribbon cables, it's IDE, so make sure you get an IDE case. otherwise, if it has thinner black or red drive cables, it's SATA.

ah you have an emachine too? welcome to the fail club  :'(

mine is broken again. same problem: i turn it on and all i hear is the fan running loud, nothing comes on the screen. this is like the 4th or 5th time it's happened. last time the repair guy replaced the motherboard, processor, and psu. things worked for like 2 and a half months or so.

the only reason i haven't shit canned the thing is because i have a pretty good warranty on it. i'll have them come out and replace shit AGAIN soon, but jeez.

One more question. A few months ago shortly after my computer got busted, a douchey friend of mine helped connect it to his computer just simply to see if the files were still there. Now, being the douche that he was, instead of turning off the computer and disconnecting my hard drive, the dumbass just yanked out the cable while it was still on. I haven't checked my hard drive since that point, so what would you say are the chances that my hard drive may be fucked?

I just got one! Now, unfortunately, when I tried to test it out on my friend's computer, I was IMMENSELY irritated to find out he was running on Windows ME (seriously, who the hell uses that in this day and age?).

Is there anything I can do about that (since mine was on XP)?

Yeah, the laptop I'll be getting is a Dell XP something or other. Hopefully it'll have less annoyances.

Drinky, need help again. I connected the hard drive enclosure to a computer that has Windows Vista (mine was working on XP). It will let me view some of the files/folders, but every time I try and click on say, one of my mp3s, it says permission denied or some shit. What's up with that and what can I do?

Also, is it okay to turn off the enclosure case without using the 'safely removing the hardware' function? I only ask cause when I connect my HD to this computer that has Vista, it won't let me remove it. I get some weird volume error or something. And what if I turn off the computer entirely (before taking it out)? Is that okay?
