Does anyone here ONLY play sports games?
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:43:39 AM »
I used to be a pretty big gamer back in the day, but nowadays, most games don't interest me. I got bored of GTA IV about half way through (I need to change my avatar). I stopped playing Call of Duty 4 even though I still think it's one of my favorite games ever. The only games I play these days are sports games:

- Euro 08
- NCAA 09
- soon to be madden 09
- soon to be nhl 09
- soon to be fifa 09

i'm planning on selling gtaIV and COD4. kind of sad since i was really hyped for gta and spent a ton of hours with COD4. anyone else in the same situation?

and I don't really play single player games anymore. hell, the only reason i'm getting nhl 09 and madden 09 are for the gaf leagues.

I should go to gamestop and buy all those old sports games no one cares about just to blow their minds.

I play College Hoops 2k8 almost daily.

I used to be a bigger sports gamer actually - playing Madden, NBA 2k, Football Manager, College Hoops, F1, etc.. almost exclusively.

Oh I guess Minna No Golf is a sports game...

Now it's more RPGs and XBLA/PSN

Same here. I used to be one of those guys that played sports games almost exclusively, but now I hardly touch them. The last one I played was The Bigs.

I liked the NHL games a lot back in the Genesis days... nowadays I haven't touched a sports game since Tennis 2k2 on DC. Unless you count Wii Sports.

Pretty much everything but sports games, except if they release another SSX or something. I look down on people who only play sports games.

As time goes on, there becomes a distinct lack of cross-over between sports gamers and non-sports gamers.  I myself have nearly quit playing sports games, thank god.  It's fun to play friends and in leagues but to me the constant game-breaking flaws and $50 roster updates just got old.  I'd play sports games but I won't buy them new anymore.  They are worthless after one year, also, if your friends are into the games, as they only want to play the new one.  Stagnation in all the genres due to license exclusivity has also hurt my interest in the genre.

I think like a lot of Guitar Hero/Rock Band gamers, sports gamers are becoming more secular and not playing games outside their genre.  I suppose the same could be said for a lot of genres (like FPS notably) but I've just known a lot of people who ONLY played sports games on their ps2/xbox and continue that on today's consoles.

the constant game-breaking flaws
The fact that the largest sports franchise in Madden has yet to get offensive line AI remotely close to being acceptable speaks volumes about the quality of sports games.

you should check out the new Fifa or NHL. there are HUGE additions to this year's games. most notably, the online Be-A-Pro mode.

EA Canada is doing a lot of great things with Fifa and NHL.

I might, NHL was my favorite sports game in the 16 bit days.  I forgot to mention soccer, but Pro Evo has been a guilty pleasure of mine the past few years.  When Fifa adopted Pro Evo controls I felt like it was coming closer to matching the Pro Evo experience, it felt like an 'arcadey' Pro Evo.  I'm not surprised to hear it's still coming along.

I feel that free-flowing sports like soccer and hockey lend themselves to videogames better than something like football as football requires such specialized ai for every position.  Like kestastrophy mentioned the offensive line play in Madden has always been, well, offensive.  It's just a loose approximation of football, and until they start caring more how the game plays vs how it looks, stuff like pulling guards and blocking fullbacks will just be a fanboys wet dream.

As long as guys can pick 'black qb flavor of the month' and run around like a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow looking for a hole, meanwhile being a constant threat to throw a 40 yard bomb on a dime, I'll just play Super Mario Galaxy and enjoy watching NFL in HD.

Last year, I got the Madden bug conveniently about the time Madden released. Imagine that. Hadn't bought a sports game since NFL 2K5 prior to that (which I actually never played... tried to join a game online once, dude quit before the game started, so I went back to playing Crimson Skies). Anyway, the last one I played extensively was NFL 2K1.

Anyway, if I get the itch to play Madden again this year (and I just may), I'm sure another Super Bowl run through 08 will suffice.

I play College Hoops 2k8 almost daily.

This game is probably the most I've ever played a game. By far the best balance of sim/fun in a basketball game that I have ever played. I'd still be playing it if it wasn't freezing on my every gaming session. Seems to be any 2k sports games for me.

I just hope this "new" college basketball game that EA is working on can come close. March Madness this gen has been absolute crap. Knowing EA, they are just changing the name because there will be no Choops2k9.  :'(

Funny you mention that. These days, Pro Evo is considered the arcadey game. Last year, Fifa improved a lot in terms of the realism and the sim experience. Fifa 09 looks to be even better.

and how does College Hoops 2K compare to NBA 2K? if I had to get one basketball game for 09, which one would it be?

That's cool, I might check out Fifa 09 then, I'll have to read up on it.  My buddy loves College Hoops 2k8 so I'll probably get that as well after reading strong things about it.  I was a big fan of the series.

If we're talking sports games, who is excited about Fight Night 4?  I love that series and seeing Iron Mike in the game will be a guilty pleasure of mine.  Did anyone play the Don King game?  Got dreadful review in EGM, too bad.

I'm the stereotypical gamer. I only play music games (RB, GH) and sports games (MLB games, hot shots, sometimes madden, NHL, Top Spin 2) and GTA.

I miss when I used to play regualr games.

The jocks I hang out with only play the same games and Call of Duty, but I rather spend money on pot than video games now a days.

I give a shit, I don't want to talk to a viral marketer about a videogame as if he's a regular poster.

But, I'm probably naive thinking that hasn't happened already.
