George Lucas: "I'm in the future; Steven’s in the past."
« on: July 30, 2008, 03:00:27 AM »
Times Online has an interview up with Lucas here. I didn't read the entire thing, and I'm probably not going to.

I'll post some quotes anyway:

Quote
Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying ‘I want it this way’ and ‘I want it that way’, whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, ‘We’ll do it this way’ — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it’s a little hard on a practical level.

Quote
Really, with the last one, Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we’d like to take. I’m in the future; Steven’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that.

If anyone wants to read the entire thing and post more quotes, be my guest. All I care about is him making Indy 5, which better not fucking happen.

In the future, where you rape it and fuck it in the mouth. Oh Lucas!

I have no innate hatred for Lucas (after all he is responsible for the Star Wars universe which I really like), but while his visionary ways yielded great results 30 years ago, nowadays it's not working so well (like with digital fucking Yoda).

it would take at least three years for indiana jones 5 to happen, at which point harrison ford will be dancing around the very edge of 70 years old

probably not going to happen

I hope Future George has pancreatic cancer.  I hope Past Steven makes movies as good as Close Encounters.

There is nothing worse than a person who thinks they can reinvent the wheel. George is one of those guys, who instead of slightly tweaking what has made him successful in the past, thinks that just by trying something new .. it absconds him of any criticism.

I think that's why Spielburg is the superior director/visionary. He understands that when making a movie .. stick to basic story telling constructs and get actors that are good. Good acting can carry a movie that is weak on plot and story.

I like how Lucas basically said he was the Big Shot during Raiders while Spielberg and Ford were newbie bums not worth listening to  :lol

Lucas needs to give franchises a rest. He has wasted a third (if not more) of his life dreaming up ways to extend already classic franchises that will stand the test of time. There's no way anyone can tell me Lucas actually thought Attack of the Clones was good, or that the Crystal Skull script was worthy of 20 years of debating over what the best sequel idea was.

He's a great visionary, we know he CAN write, he's a good editor. But it seems like all of these skills have shrunken as he has continually minimized them to fix into his various pet projects. In short he might have wasted his talent a long time ago. And speaking of "old" vs "new" this interview basically confirms that his Tuskegee film is going to be shit. I can already imagine the excessive CG. Spielberg is right; Crystal Skull sucked but I would have tolerated it more without the horrible CG

Yeah? Lucas is in the future of making distinguished mentally-challenged CG shit while Steven's too consumed with making movies people give a damn about.
