More Shin Megami Tensei love for the PS2
« on: July 30, 2008, 10:49:54 PM »
July 30, 2008 - Atlus is bringing the Devil Summoner series back to the PS2, the latest issue of Famitsu reports. Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Versus King Abaddon, as the new title is known, will hit the Japanese PS2 on October 23.

In this sequel to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, you once again play as Raidou Kuzunoha. The title promises updated battle and investigation components and a "more occult" taste.

The setting for the sequel has moved away from the original's capital city location to a village far in the countryside. Raidou is asked to conduct an investigation into the whereabouts of someone who's gone missing, and ends up going to the village with his black cat buddy at his side. As he conducts his investigation, he learns that a great danger is approaching the capital city.

New to the game is the MAG Scheduling Battle system. As part of this system, you strike enemies in their weak points to steal their "MAG," which is the name for the energy that demons require in order to appear in the real world. Your ally demons can use the stolen MAG to unleash powerful special skills. This system appears to encourage you to continue inflicting damage on foes, as doing so earns you more MAG which can be used to inflict more damage and further steal more MAG.

Kazuyuki Yamai is in the director's cubicle for the sequel. Producer and character designer is, of course, Kazuma Kaneko.

The title is currently 80% complete, Famitsu reports.

LOVE IT =)

I liked the Vs. Soul-less army game.

Many did not. Be weary and dont assume youll like it as much as Persona or Digital Devil Saga.

What the fuck are you talking about?

DDS and SMT3 have the exact same battle system for the most part. It's called Press Turn. Persona 3 has an evolution of the Press Turn battle system called One More.

In fact, Persona has more similarities to SMT than DDS. DDS has no demon recruitment AT ALL. Are you sure you've played these games? The fact that DDS has no demon recruitment doesn't take away from the fact the battle system rules are pretty much the same as SMT3.

There really isnt a PS2 era SMT game I hate

That's because it's the best jrpg series on the ps2.

DDS1+2 is one of the best rpgs on the ps2. But SMT3 is better. I think that if you put DDS1 and 2 together, they're on par with SMT3, but if you take them a part they're weaker.

I still need to finish P3:FES so I can start on SMT: Nocturne. I'll pick up DDS1&2 eventually.

ummm no...

In persona you summon personas which are basically like using a summoner in FF. In DDS your characters take on their demon form which is basically again like summoning....

in Nocturne you manage a party of pokemon like beasts. (and then there is the Dante potential)

You can read Japanese?

No - but it didn't stop me from Front Mission, Megami Tensai or even figuring out Kings Field PSP in more recent times.

Truth be told I got the game and system from a school friend of mine who was a JP airforce brat.

I can read and write russian tho.

Im also only sayin this stuff because I dont think a guy who just got unleppered for ripping off forum members needs to be typing things like "dont talk about SMT again"

Like in a discussion thread where everyone is going to refer to MT III as Nocturne - WHY call it "SMT3"?

Its not fucking SMT3 and this isnt fucking GAF - its Nocturne!

It's actually Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

Right - but nobody really thinks of it as SMT3 in North America

SMT: Nocturne - sure.

It's no different from The Mummy 3 being "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer" - we know its the 3rd entry, and fans know Nocturne is the 3rd entry

I dont see what there is to argue about.

There was no MT or MT II in the US. Many SMT fans in the US started with Nocturne or Persona on the PSOne and know it as SMT: Nocturne. It was their gateway drug into Digital DEvil Saga and Devil Summoner....

Everyone can stop pretending that they are Japanese or know about games that arent even that good in the first place. NES MT games blow.

I still do not know what Demi is getting at posting the cover of a Japanese soundtrack and comparing it to a line of movies where all three sequels were released in the US.
