Since we're apparently heading into the next gen across the board with all 2 systems and the Wii coming out after this weekend, I figured it would be a nice time to look back and think about what games we all enjoyed this past gen, which I will remember as a pretty fun time to be a gamer.

Most Favoritest Action Game

Freaking awesome demon slaying action with shit tons of different weapons, fighting styles, guns and shit. Oh, and it was hard, too, which this gen was a freaking rarity for the most part. I'm getting a boner thinking about it.

Mention of Honorableness

OMG NINJAS! One of the better xbox games is also one of the better games of the past gen, period. DMC3 just seems a little bit deeper, but Itagaki still make me moist with action gamer horniness.

Most Favoritest RPG

The fact that this game wasn't commercially successful is the greatest indictment on modern gamer's tastes, imo. This game had kick ass combat, cool new mechanics and steep difficulty. Of course, it was an rpg, so instead of fans lining up to worship at the feet of this dev team, they whined to the extent that the devs apologized. WTF total.

Mention of Honorableness

This was a better representation of Star Wars than all 3 prequels put together and covered in jizz, even demi's jizz. It was also another representation of everything that was right in rpgs, but this one got bought and won shit tons of awards, deservedly. The light/dark force shifts, the open endedness, the fun combat, the force powers all went into this recipe of awesomeness. It also had the best character in all of videogaming history, HK-47.

Most Favoritest Fighting Game

If you try and argue this, you are a tard. VP4 Evo is not just my personal FAVORITE fighting game, it's the BEST fighting game of the past gen, unequivocally. In fact, it's so good I'm not gonna make a mention of honorableness in this category.

Most Favoritest Driving Type Game

OMG sparks! Sorry sim wankers, I like FUN driving games. And Burnout 3 was the most fun driving game of the past gen. Lots of fun modes, including the hands down BEST multiplayer drunken fun, crash mode. "Dude, dude, try to beat my score! It's legal to drink and drive!"

I didn't really like any other driving games not named Burnout, so no mention of honorableness from me.

Most Favoritest Puzzle-esque Game

Just fun addictive stuff here, which is what this genre is all about. Awesome music, too. Not much more to say; I mean who can't love the idea behind this game?

Mention of Honorableness

Even my black, Nintendo hating heart was melted by the wacky fun of Wario Ware.

Worstest (non)Game of All-time Ever of the Gen

And while VF is very good and full of awesome, I prefer Soul Calibur 2/3 ftw.

Also Burnout does indeed spank any other car driving/racing game.\

And SSBM was a fun little diversion, but in no way approaches the deepness of VF4.

Give me a fucking break, I loved VF4 and Soul Caliber 2/3,and Guilty Gears is damn near my favorite fighting series. But regardless, SSMB kicked ass.

The fighting game argument can be easily solved by splitting it into 2D and 3D categories.

Also VF4 Evolution isn't as good as VF4 Final Tuned, but I know most of you haven't played that.

Also Triumph, the DS is part of the "next gen." GBA was this gen, IMO.

This is dumb, that's for sure. Smash Bros. IS a fighting game. You can change it to "multiplayer fighter" or "party fighter" if you want to, but regardless, it IS a fighting game.

Yea, I think of it as a fighting game too. Of course, it's nothing like a VF or SC, but it's fucking awesome nonetheless. Probably my game of the generation.

BEST FIGHTING GAME

SOUL CALIBUR

I have actually never played a Virtua Fighter in my life, so maybe my opinion is biased. I just know that this game completely rocked my world when it came out. Being 13 at the time, I couldn't believe how massive of a step the game was. It utterly destroyed everything that preceded it. Every one of my friends that played it loved it

BEST ACTION/ADVENTURE GAME

METROID PRIME

It brought Metroid into 3D perfectly. Fuck everyone that will commence hating now.

BEST RACING GAME

F-ZERO GX

So hard, but so perfect. Never before have I tried so hard to complete a game fully. Fastest game on the planet.

RUNNER-UP

BURNOUT 3

I'm bothering to do a runner-up because I love this series and 3 was the pinnacle. I'm not going to repeat with Triumph said. He knows what's up.

BEST PUZZLE GAME

Katamari Damacy

Yea, it rocks. Done.

BEST SPORTS GAME

Virtua Tennis

Like Soul Calibur, everyone that played this loved it. Dreamcast was hooked up into 2003 only because of this game and Soul Calibur.

Best Game: Guitar Hero 1/2. If you're under 50 and not a christian fundamentalist you probably love this game. Between easy and expert it has accessibility and difficulty and is extremely addictive. For the past year or so it has been played at the local Best Buy almost constantly and usually with a small crowd.

Best Action Game: Halo. It's probably the first single player FPS I've loved since Doom 2. I bought my Xbox for Rallisport Challenge but Halo is the reason I kept it (the only one, really).

Best Driving / Racing Game: Gran Turismo 4. I've spent 4 hours getting a gold license on a two minute per lap rally race before. It's the best console racing sim and the one with the most tracks/cars.

Best Strategy Game: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. I hate NoA for leaving out the maniac mode as the game was too easy on hard but it was addictive and satisfying. Battles are epic (some take a couple hours near the end) and players aren't burdened by ridiculous amounts of customization. So, perfect for me.

Best RPG: WoW. Not a console game but fuck you, that game is crack.

In Metroid Prime you have to time everything about how long it takes to move around the environment, different weapon characterisitics, enemy characteristics, and very occasionally you'll have to switch visors if you don't instantly know what to do after a few shots/steps. Metroid Prime depends on memorizing and analyzing at the fucking same time RPG fegs.

Mother 3 FTW!

Don't hate till you try it, vastly improved in some areas over Earthbound, this gba sequel kicks all sorts of ass.

And the music is fucking amazing for a GBA game. Have a listen to the first boss battle music here:
