Man, its not all painkillers that you need. Your oral surgeon needs to be good at what he/she does as well.

I had to have widom teeth removed a while back. I had the usual one on each side on the top, but had an EXTRA on the top right behind the one there.

They put me to sleep to do it and I woke up about an hour later. Done. no pain. They did it on a thursday morning, gave me a thing of vicadim 10s (800 Mgs size) and a pack of gauze and let me go. I didnt feel a twinge of pain until Friday afternoon (havent taken any vicodins yet because he told me not to until I felt pain). When I did, I popped a vicodin and it went away.

So hopefully your dental stuff goes as well as mine did.

Best dentist quote ever:  "I can't call in this kind of painkiller--you have to bring it in yourself" complete with "wait till you get a load of this" eyebrow movements.

All my major problems are with wisdom teeth and the molars adjacent to wisdom teeth, so at least my smile isn't in danger.

I am going to get at least one gold tooth, though.  I want that molar replaced with motehrfuckin bling.

Unforseen side effect that will not get fixed for a while:  I can't chew, so it's all liquids for me :(  I guess I'd better consider getting a dental implant for that molar sooner rather than later.

I actually went to the dentist the other day and asked about if I should get my wisdom tooth removed (considering it is stabbing my right cheek), but he didn't really make it seem like it was getting pulled anytime soon.  I did all this research on it and everything.  It must suck bad with all that bleeding and saltwater.

And screw the gold tooth.  Get a tooth with a button on it to use in emergency situations.

I was looking at the price for dental implants, and I think I'm going to ask about having a couple teeth that require extensive work extracted and then replaced with implants (for "smile" teeth I'd get enamel-looking replacements).  I have 2 or 3 okay teeth that need work that would be better off with implants.

I have to call the fancy lad specialist that's going to do the root canals on Monday to set up an appointment.  The first appointment will likely just be him poking around and scoping out the job.  It is in my interest to get things done as soon as possible.

How are you holding up TVC? I just got my wisdom teeth taken out about an hour or two ago. They knocked me out with an IV and I was feeling great. Currently I'm sitting on a couch watching Doomsday with my laptop to keep me company. The only problem is that when my parents brought me home, I sat on a stool thinking I was hot stuff or something and was going to eat jello. I ended up passing out or having a seizure and landed on my face. I think I just hit my forehead because if I hit my jaw I would've broken it. Ugh. What a day.

I'm still in a lot of pain.  I have to see the root canal dude today so he can scope the job, but he probably won't do anything today.  Afterwards I'm going to call my dentist and see if I can't get more painkillers.  The pain is still really bad and it's at the point where I'm going to have to start missing work if there's no immediate relief.

My insurance will be exhausted after one root canal.  After that, it's all out of pocket.  Two root canals out of pocket will cost me about 2 grand.  Then I have about 3 grand worth of dental work to get done this year.

Ha, that's my problem. I didn't go to the dentist for a few years and then when I did go last year I had a bunch of cavities. They filled like 4-6 before telling me that my insurance wouldn't cover the rest, and I'd have to wait for the next year. I think I'm probably going to need a couple root canals and a few more fillings this year also :(

I don't mind getting work done, though. I had extensive oral surgery when I was younger, so I'm used to it. I just hate sitting there with my mouth open for so long. Actually, I should probably be scared shitless of the dentist. When I saw a specialist dentist in San Francisco to pull out three of my teeth in preparation for a tumor extraction the quack somehow damaged a nerve in my tongue that left me in agony, spitting out blood regularly for like 2 months. I don't know the specifics because I was so young at the time, but I remember that the hotel we stayed at overnight gave us a bunch of white towels to staunch the blood flow the day after the procedure, and the morning after they were all dyed pink :lol I still have one of those

Percocet 5? Shit sounds like some kind of DEFCON meter for PAIN, awesome.

I'd wager that the situation with dental insurance is even more dire than that of regular health insurance for 20-somethings. At least you don't have to worry too much about major stuff healthwise when you're that young, but dental? It's way too easy to let a cavity go too long and end up needing a high-cost procedure like a root canal.

I'm on a generic brand of Percocet called Endocet 5/325 and I've also got 800mg Motrin pills. Pretty good stuff. The Percocet makes me a bit lightheaded, though.

I always pay for my appointment before I have the procedure done, just so I'm always covered for one trip ahead.

I have three root canals to get.  Due to them each costing a bit more than a grand, I am going to get one a month for the next 3 months, in order to keep my finances in best possible shape.

PD, if you read this, do you know what the max time frame between getting a root canal and getting a crown is?  Could it wait a few months, or must it be done basically immediately?

He said you're going to want to get the core and crown done immediately after the root canal. After a root canal it's easy for brittle to build up in the area, and after awhile it'll be messed up again...thus causing you to have to get another. He said if you can't get the crown done immediately after you should hold off on the root canal until you get get both procedures done around the same time.

I'm probably looking at roughly a month between root canal and crown.  The tooth that needs the root canal is the cause of a lot of pain, so I kind of need it done asap.

How about a week?  I'm getting the root canal done on the 12th, and my next appt with my dentist is on the 19th.  I'm supposed to be getting deep cleaning, but I am sure I can negotiate now and that he'll want to do what's best.

Also, I know the root canal dude is filling the tooth immediately after he does the root canal.  Does that mean anything?

He's sleep now; I'll make sure and ask tomorrow. A week will work though, just don't chew on that side of your mouth; you could probably wait a month but you have to be careful; the risk isn't worth it. If he's filling the root canal immediately it could mean very little of that tooth is left. Assuming that's the case that area is going to be pretty sensitive. My grandma got a root canal a few months ago, went home and ate some peanuts which screwed it up. So yea, just watch what you eat (and where you chew) and you should be all good. I don't remember: you got your wisdom teeth pulled already right? If so you're probably already being careful about chewing

It's not the chewing side of my mouth.  Actually, I CAN'T chew on that side of the mouth even if I wanted to.  That's where the molar was extracted.  I can't even really chew on the "good" side of my mouth.  It's why I'm off solid foods now.

I forgot about that. Since that's the case it sounds like you could wait longer than a week, but I'll ask to make sure; just send me a PM with all the info and I'll send it to my dad

Root canals/crowns are strange. In my grandma's case she messed hers up quite fast, but there are other people who go months without a crown and manage to not mess it up. Due to the cost (my dad's practice charges up to $1200 for a root canal) it seems best to not take any chances...or just go on a liquid diet which I bet most people don't want to do (or can't). This should be cleared up by the time it is root canal time, but it is currently difficult to brush the root canal tooth because there are stitches right next to the tooth (from the molar that was extracted).  I think the stitches are due to dissolve/fall out any day now, so they shouldn't be an issue by the time it is root canal time.
