what was so great about there will be blood
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:35:04 AM »
it was a good movie, but what's so great about it aside from the main character. fill me in eb.

I wasn't a big fan of the acting. Felt staged. When dude did that preaching shit goodness graceness I wanted to leave the room because it reminded me of actually going to church, it was so obnoxious.

i enjoyed No Country a lot more. Ratatouille A LOT more. Death Proof and Hot Fuzz TONS more.

Don't feel confused or anything, Daniel Day Lewis makes the film and makes it worth watching.

Yeah, his acting was great. I'm not so sure about every one else's performance though. The kid felt totally lifeless to me until

The scenery, the score, the camera work, the intimacy of character, the uneasiness that fills the whole film, the preacher kid WAS awesome and great final scene.

Have you ever seen a more suspenseful movie where not much happens? It feels like something sinister is lurking in every single frame, and yet, outside of the final scene, what really happens? Some shit falls on miners in the well, a scaffolding collapses, nothing major. Yet the movie feels fucking evil. It's greed that's the lurking horror, not some ax murderer.

I thought it was amazing. The cinematography was amazing, the score is great, the writing was great, and the acting was amazing - not just DDL. Dano's performance as the pastor was very compelling, especially if you've been to an evangelical church and witnessed the theatrics involved. His greed is really comparable to the DDL character's

But DDL's performance stands out and really makes the film. It's really a slow descent into hatred. The dude kind of floats through life hiding himself with the most convenient mask possible, and then after a certain event he just snaps. No more mask, no more bullshit

Those two statements contradict each other.  If the acting wasn't good, that church scene would have felt fake, right?

Very intense scene, very intense movie.  As PD said above, people forget Dano's great turn.  Without him, the movie would have failed, he was a worthy adversary for DDL to play off of.

I guess it's contradictory, but it made me feel uneasy. It made me hate his character.

I know! But still!  :lol His acting still didn't impress me. It came off as forced to me. It wasn't natural like DDL's performance.

That's fair.  One thing that interested me was that Dano was originally up for only the brother role.  He stepped into the preacher role at the last moment for some reason.  Considering DDL had been preparing for the Plainview part for over a year, I thought Dano did a bang-up job.

I can see where he was annoying, though.  I think it's kinda like the Baby Mario cry in Yoshi's Island, some people it just rubs the wrong way (even though that's what it was supposed to achieve.)

I think the main goal was for the audience to be completely uneasy everytime the preacher was on the screen, and much like Jaquin Phoenix in Gladiator, Dano delivered a very hated performance.  For that he deserves credit, he created a very interesting character in a character piece.

edit:  By that same token, though, I find that to be the biggest flaw in the movie.  HW wasn't a really developed character (like it was said above he only becomes interesting after going deaf/mute) and other than a 20 min segment with DDL's 'brother,' there isn't a single interesting character in the movie.  A three hour character piece with only two interesting characters is a stretch.  The movie could have been better from this pov, however that has little with what I like about the movie (cinamatography, setting, special effects, set building, and the two performances.)

that was a good scene.
