Mega Man 9 to feature optional 8-bit glitches
« on: August 04, 2008, 09:54:24 PM »

Confused? So am I.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Mega Man 9 producer, Hironobu Takeshita reveals that Mega Man 9 will feature classic glitches from previous 8-bit installments. One of the more common glitches were sprites would start to flicker if you had more then three enemy's on screen at a time.

Takeshita went on to explain that, In the options menu you can adjust the speed of the flicker or turn it off altogether. These optional glitches were put into the game to recreate the feel of the original titles, which sounds great but will anyone turn them on?

yeah, we got in a big fight over it

he was like, "it has to be a ROM, it's showing the old Famicom artifacting when too many sprites are on a line"
I was like, "no fucking way are they coding 6602 assembler in 2008"
we were both kind of right

That's some weird fan service. Even as a fan of the classic games I always found the flickering annoying.

It makes sense that they're making an 8-bit game for the Wii.

i guess it's a cute detail, but i turn off sprites-per-line limits even when i'm using an emulator

i prefer not to think about the forced hysterics gaf ninthings must be having in response to this news

It's sad that the industry has to deal with Wii ports now.

Everything's backwards.

Gah, I predicted it!

After playing through and loving No More Heroes, which is thick with pixelated visual flourishes and tinny, 8-bit musical fanfares, I wondered if someday we might see games using a prior generation's technical shortcomings as just another tool of artistic expression. Like Rodriguez and Tarantino digitally adding scratches, grain and missing reels to Grindhouse or even Spielberg shooting Schindler's List in black-and-white, would game developers someday add things like flicker, slowdown, limited frames of animation, horrendous Engrish or even pop-up to a game to better express themselves?

Capcom - with Mega Man 9 - seems to say yes.

Flickering was annoying, the slowdown was key, though.

Not too big a fan of flickering in the old retro games but still, pretty cool how they actually emulated it and left it in as an option. Slowdown was crucial in beating some of the action games of the time though.

If I played a 'NES Contra' without slowdown (or more than a handful of others) it would ruin the experience for me.  Some emulators suffer for this very reason.

Vindicated! Well, sorta.:lol

Either way, sort of crazy anal retentive levels of attention to detail there.  Flicker really wasn't necessary, and to have it be optional is all sorts of nutty.

That's... a really weird option.

Then again, emulation nuts have some inexplicable obsession with features like "emulates 1985 NTSC image quality and scanlines" so whatever.

You've never seen the scanline options in emulators?

Scanlines are all but necessary when playing anything from a system before 3D IMO.
