Frag, I need your help (CivRev related)!

In a weird reversal, it is seemingly a LOT tougher to get a cultural victory on the console game than the PC game (which was the easiest, in my opinion).  If you get a bunch of Great People, civs will constantly battle you for them.  I was being attacked by three civs at one point for the same Great Person.  I fell TWO shy of the number of Great People, Wonders, etc. needed to get the cultural win.

Is there a decent strategy to get the cultural win?  Maybe I'm doing the tech tree all wrong and not maximizing it to get me the most amount of wonders.

Despite my approval of the demo, I never bought the game. $60 is a lot, and I've been playing XBLA strategy games when I felt the need for a console fix lately anyway.
