Basically our webhost wants us to pay 25 bucks to have Wordpress installed. That is totally reasonable, it's a complicated procedure and a pain for a n00b like me.

But then they wanna charge us 25 bucks EVERY MONTH for, uh. They actually won't tell us why. Thi's highway robbery given that WP is free and I'd like to just DIY it, but I know I'm in over my head. Has anyone here done it? Are you hirable? Or can you walk me through it?

  Famous 5-Minute Install

Here's the quick version of the instructions, for those that are already comfortable with performing such installations. More detailed instructions follow.

   1. Download and unzip the WordPress package, if you haven't already.
   2. Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.
   3. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.
   4. Open wp-config.php in your favorite text editor and fill in your database details.
   5. Place the WordPress files in the desired location on your web server:
   * If you want to integrate WordPress into the root of your domain (e.g. http://example.com/), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (but excluding the directory itself) into the root directory of your web server.
   * If you want to have your WordPress installation in its own subdirectory on your web site (e.g. http://example.com/blog/), rename the directory wordpress to the name you'd like the subdirectory to have and move or upload it to your web server. For example if you want the WordPress installation in a subdirectory called "blog", you should rename the directory called "wordpress" to "blog" and upload it to the root directory of your web server.

   Hint: If your FTP transfer is too slow read how to avoid FTPing at : Step 1: Download and Extract.
   6. Run the WordPress installation script by accessing wp-admin/install.php in your favorite web browser.
   * If you installed WordPress in the root directory, you should visit: http://example.com/wp-admin/install.php
   * If you installed WordPress in its own subdirectory called blog, for example, you should visit: http://example.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

That's it! WordPress should now be installed.

Our webhost is shitty, but we need them for the moment. The have all of our e-commerce stuff neat and tidy and they generally bend over backwards to accomodate. They just treat you like an idiot and take FOR FUCKING EVER to do ANYTHING. You need to give them like a 6 weeks heads up for even small projects.

I'll probably suggest a switch to my boss next year, but for now we're tied together.

The 25$/mth is just crazy and we're not going to pay it. We already pay them too much for shit. They just redesigned our site in January (Kind of poorly) and I think we're under contract for a bit. But their front end is shitty (You can no longer put anything in an iFrame from their front end updater because the updater IS an iFrame. So you have to work-order it. Fuckin' hope you don't like Google Maps) and their architecture is generally byzantine. But like I said, they integrate well with our e-commerce and making a swap at this point would be difficult and expensive.

What's the pricing on a host with e-commerce and all? I think we're laying out 250/mth. Plus other fees.

I don't think I have a MySQL panel. I have to poke around, their interface is fucking bloated. I'm gonna work on this tommorrow, I have to finish the design for our Japan site

I used dreamhost for 4 years and eventually moved off; the downtime and reliability issues got to be too severe. They also accidentally quadruple billed all their customers (which is distinguished mentally-challenged, but happens) but then instead of apologizing they were like "lol" (http://www.themediaslut.com/2008/01/870). That was the final straw for me.

I'm on LunarPages now and have been MUCH happier.

their webmail client
1) sucked (squirrelmail, fails on Japanese pretty harshly)
2) had like 70% uptime or so

not being able to access e-mail for half an hour or so happened every few days.

my blog would also go down for about half a day at least once a month due to database connection issues.

I dunno, it's your choice, but if you're looking for cheap/dirty/friendly webhosting, I would recommend against dreamhost based on my experiences and their behavior. there are better options out there.

I have clients on there and no one's complained, which either means they've handled it themselves (lol), they don't care (maybe), they don't know (likely), or they figure it's not worth the expense to move (very possible).
