My friends went to school with Phelps. They said he was a dick. His teeth are fucked up. But man can he swim.
He looks like he'd be an ass to be honest.

Um, you guys are distinguished mentally-challenged. You can display the American flag backwards. There is nothing wrong with it. If it was upside down, you might have something to laugh at.

(Image removed from quote.)

Bush is stupid hur hur hur.

Because of US military regulations, the flag is reversed when it's patched on the right shoulder of a uniform. It's done this way so the flag appears to be advancing when soldiers walk forward. Since Bush's flag isn't on his right shoulder, I don't see how that photo supports your position.

Quote
Display flag with canton on the right (canton is the blue field with the 50 start).  Display canton facing right when displayed on a casket, when displayed as a decal on the right side of a vehicle (bus, truck, plane, etc.) When worn as a patch on the right arm (but use on left arm is preferable).

As for actual flags. . . .

Quote
When displaying flag with canton on the left (canton is the blue field with the 50 stars), the canton of the flag should always be to the observer's left.

It's a two sided flag. The people behind him are seeing it with the canton on the left. It doesn't matter. As long as it isn't hung on a wall it can be held that way.

Sure, he was displaying it to the forty people directly behind him, and not to the thousands of people in front of him, including the swimmers who won the race, or to the cameras displaying the flag to millions of viewers. OK

Well, one thing that pushes the US over every other country in swimming are them new speedo suits right?  I hear those suits are so good and that's why the swimming teams are making so many world records this year. That's a major technological bump.

I've got a dilemma... do I watch the men's gymnastics live in SD on CBC right now, or do I sit through all the swimming finals I've already seen and wait to watch the gymnastics in HD in a couple hours?

I think according to either Time or Washington Post it was due to some dolphin dive/kick or something.

Watch Phelps on his push off, he swims down much farther than anyone else.

My college roommate and now close friend swam for like 15 years, I've learned so much about the sport from him.

I think it's higher than 90% now. The way Phelps moves in the water is what puts him above everyone else.

Nope, they're showing volleyball and synchronized diving right now.

Thank God that we get CBUT (Vancouver CBC) in Seattle!

The swimming suits are why records keep breaking, the technology just keeps getting better and it's getting people to swim faster.

Phelps utilizes the dolphin kick off his starts and turns more than some competitors, and that gives him an edge. Natalie Coughlin does the same thing. You can stay underwater dolphin kicking for freestyle and backstroke for up to 15m off your start and turns, which is a good portion of any race.

I was a competitive swimmer for a long time. I LOVE watching Olympic swimming.

But HOLY SHIT, did you see men's gymnastics!?! I can't believe we got a bronze! That Jonathan Horton was a total babe, too. :heart

I always watch the guys on the rings, and I swear it looks like the hardest event ever. I won a physical fitness award in high school, and part of the qualification was being able to do a 7-second bar-hang or a single pull-up. I had a hell of a hard time with one pull-up. I can't imagine having the sort of upper body strength needed to do the rings. Maybe that's why they're only an event in men's gymnastics?

Wow, who knew that Olympians were so horny.

Then I read this article from 2004.

Quote
At the Albertville winter Olympics, condom machines in the athletes’ village had to be refilled every two hours. And in Sydney the organisers’ original order of 70,000 condoms went so fast that they had to order 20,000 more. Even with the replenishment, the supply was exhausted three days before the end of the competition schedule. (For the record, athletes who were in Sydney report that the Cuban delegation was the first to use up its allocation.) Salt Lake City in 2002 went even bigger: 250,000 condoms were handed out, despite the objections of the city’s Mormon leadership.

I bought a pair of gymnastic rings recently for Crossfit training. I could do pull-ups and dips etc on a bar(s) already but holy freaking crap, they're so much harder on rings. The stabilization element just cranks it up about 10 notches. Just holding yourself in the arms-locked, top-of-the-dip position is brutal - the first time I tried it, my arms shook uncontrollably. Rings are an amazing strength training tool, especially considering they cost me $50 and you can use them damn near anywhere. Unfortunately, you quickly realize that having a low bodyweight is 2nd only to upper body strength when it comes to the rings...
