Looking for a good system for my daughter
« on: August 08, 2008, 11:08:27 PM »
I'm hoping some of you can help me.  My 5 year old is severly disabled and she responds well to TV so i wanted to get her something that might spark something in her.  I tried the kid game systems and they require too much so my husband suggested the Wii.  Are there any games that can be played easily.  meaning she moves it around with her hands and it responds on screen with little effort from her.  They are quite pricey and I want to make sure i'm not waisting my money. ??? thanks

Great!  I live in Maryland does any one know where the best place to find it?  I looked on ebay but they are so expensive and I doubt the insurance company would consider it therapy... :-*

By severly disabled I mean... mentally a 5 month old and physically is able to sit, move her arms and kick her feet

my daughter loves her ds (portable nintendo) and catz/catz 2, and has since she was 2 (she's now 4). note that you'll hafta set up the cat for her, but if you can get her to hold the stylus (or use her finger) and just poke and rub the on-screen cat, she should get some serious mileage out of it. i think there's a catz 2 for the wii, too!

In that situation, probably the Wii is the best bet.

As for games, Wii Sports is a lot of fun with others.  If you only have one controller and want to play with with her, feel free to pick up Wii Play that comes with mini games and another wii remote (it only cost $10 more than just the controller itself).  The games in Wii Play aren't that great, but there are some ones that can be fun like the target shooting one.  Kororinpa/Marble Mania is good.  All that requires you to do is movie the remote which moves the stage and the goal is to get a marble into the goal.

Oh yeah, the DS is a good one also.

if her assessed mental age is actually five months, it's gonna be all stimulus/response. i suggest yer husband buy some bright colorful simple games, and play them in front of her. i catch shit on here for this, but "the dog island" (wii) has huge google-eyed puppies and simple graphics that should really get her attention, and there's nothing even remotely threatening in the game. it shouldn't tax you or him much to play it, outside of the almost offensively saccharine cuteness of it all ;)

Given this new information, and if you or your husband are willing to take control of most of the action, then Elebits on the Wii is actually a good choice.  Essentially you would be controlling the movement of the character and your daughter could simply be helping out with another beam.  The game is really simple and all you really do is toss things around a room and try to find little creatures to zap.

I was going to suggest some of those arcade games that you can find on PSN, and racing games like motorstorm that allow motion movement, my 4 year old cousin loves it. This before i knew she had the mentality of a 5 month. In that case i can't recomend you anything really, as far as videogame consoles go.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but i wouldn't get past showing her animated movies and T.V cartoons, and play directly with her. I don't see how, if she has the mentally of a 5 month old, a game system is ever going to work.

Short answer: Either the Nintendo Wii or DS is the options you should look into.

Long answer: The Wii will be hard to come across, so prepare to fork over some money online via CraigsList in your area, or eBay of some sort. The DS is more common and shouldn't be hard to just find in a store. The next step would be to walk to a game retailer like EBGames / GameStop and browse the libraries. I think, if you maybe ask (Willco could probably jump in on this one), given your situation, they will let you try the games on the demo units they have displayed. Most of the time you can get a general idea from the back of the boxes, though. Lots of research will be involved, you could try the new childrens website - What They Play, its focused on parents and helps describe what is in the games children (or adults) play.

This is the nicest and most civil we've ever been with each other.

But n'thing the Wii- There's enough of a response even when you do it "wrong" that I'm not sure she'd even notice. There's just a lot of feedback on the screen from general movement that the novelty of it is amusement enough sometimes

You might want to consider a cheap computer, if you don't have a computer already. There are a lot of casual games on the PC that are cheap, fun, easy for kids to play by themselves or with a parent, and they don't require a high-end system. Peggle would be a great choice.

No offense, but I think your plan is a little naive.  The response from television comes about from receiving no input.  Whats the exact diagnosis of the child. That could help.  If you want to go the game route,  Wii music when it comes out sounds perfect.  ANY input will yield results. Electroplankton for the ds sounds like a good fit too.

I want to thank all of you for your responses, we took her to a friends house who happened to have a wii and they let us try it.  It was awesome!  She had so much fun, I haven't seen her laugh like that in awhile.  I didn't try the DS yet but is the screen is kind of small?  She is very low vision so the bigger the better.  I will have to look at the puppy game, she would love it.

To whoever asked why I posted here, it came up on a search and it looked like a place where I could get a fast response for some knowledgeable people.  with all the bs I just wanted an honest opinion on what to do. I 've read some of the back posts and I knew what I was in for but I though it was worth it, and I'm glad you could help.

I know it's costly, I'm trying to see if I can get the ARC or the Developmental Disabilities Agency to help pay for it they pay for other adaptive toys so we will see.  I won't know until after school is back in session but hopefully I can get it for her or we will just have to keep visiting the couple down the street!

It's a chromosomal abnormality that neither my husband or myself carry.  It's just some fluke thing that happened and our other children are completely normal.  She looks completely normal and we didn't know there was anything wrong with her until she was 6 months and didn;t get a diagnosis until 1 year.  Thank you all!
