you have until SEPTEMBER 15th to master this game. The winner is the person with the highest level character demonstrated by a posted screenshot and/or a character file to this thread at midnight SEPT 16th. if you make it to level 100 and kill morgoth first, you automatically win. if i make it to 100 before any of you, you are all my dumpster bitches and i will pleasure your shameholes at my leisure.

you will probably not win.

the winner gets a copy of too human and a slick new razr gaming mouse. hopefully, the mouse will make up for getting too human.

mods, any chance of a sticky? angband is for both awesome cutting-edge windows and icky useless mac os.

death screen works as a progress indicator, and also for winning if no-one else can get to 100 and slay morgoth, or produce evidence of a higher-level character. if there is evidence of save hacking or copying, i'll pester maf and willco to ban the cheater for a week. this contest is predicated on good faith in evilbore's integrity as gamers.

a friend and i had multiple accounts and fucked with another, stupider friend for weeks on a local bbs years ago

Yes, in the file menu. After saving, you can quit any time.

n00b tips:

1. roll a character with at least 250 gold (AU), unless yer a kobold who can never start with more than 100. if yer a warrior type, get yer AC up to 10ish by buying leather armor (3-4 AC), a leather helm (2-3 AC), leather boots (2 AC), leather gloves (2 AC), and a cloak (1 AC, sold in supply store). buy 5-10 torches and 5-10 rations, as AU permits.

2. easiest starting classes are warrior, priest, and paladin. mages, rangers, and rogues are for the hardcore. best race class combos for nubs are: dwarf priest, human paladin, dwarf paladin, and kobold warrior.

3. do NOT leave the first level of the dungeon until you are at LEAST level 3.

4. "R" (capital r) rests. "o" opens. "g" gets items on your square. "w" equips an item (wear/wield). "C" is yer character screen, "e" is your equipment, and "i" is your inventory. "T" tunnels through rubble, weak walls, and walls with gold. "s" searches for hidden doors. "S" turns on search mode (and turns it off).

5. worms and mice spawn rapidly. nubs will probably wake them up. leave the floor if they spawn out of control, or jam/spike a door to trap them in a room.

6. the game hates your guts. it wants to hurt you. you win by being prepared and observant.

7. It's a tactical game. Use narrow corridors to your advantage--if you see more than 2 enemies in a room, it might be best to hold back and throw some shit into the room to attract the monsters to make them come to you, so you can take them on one at a time.

What are the hints for identifying potions aside from using a scroll of identify or quaffing them? I know there are several ways in nethack.

Whaaaaa? I got to level three then drank a red potion because red potions are supposed to heal (at least they do in every other game) but it made me blind and I got raped by a swarm of rats.

This game is rough.

Here's my first real failure. The game reminds me alot of Temple of Apshai (my first RPG) in how it's set up. I'll make a better attempt at playing it tomorrow and Tue. since I have the day off.

I don't get the save system. Are saves destroyed when you die? I saved at level 3 then died, and when I restarted and opened my save it prompted me to make a new character.

yes, saved are destroyed when you die. you can cheat the system by duplicating the save when you exit, but that will disqualify you from this little competition.

Ah yeah I was wondering if that might be it. Does it take you back down too though?
