O’Neal had, up to this point, played the character amicably. He’s a nice guy that you root for, but once he gets his rich bride he turns into a true cock-ass. Seriously. I thought at this point I was going to fall out of interest in the movie. If they’re going to turn the lead into a wife-abusing dickhead for the final hour and a half, then what am I going to connect with as a viewer?

And really, I thought Quint was one of the better people at the site.  He was a dickhead throughout the movie.  It's kind of a staple of a picaresque.

The point is that Redmond Barry is always an opportunistic jerkass.  Aside from possibly the beginning (when he is making out with his cousin), he is never interested in anything other than pure self-interest.  He's not a "nice guy" at all.  Picaresques are about roguish characters falling ass backwards into adventure.  In the end (of at least the movie), Redmond Barry gets his just desserts.

I still maintain that there will not be a BD version.  There hasn't even been an anamorphic version.  The notorious candlelit shots probably do not translate well to higher resolutions.  There is almost no depth of field in them, so at high resolutions, they probably look as vaseline covered as Himuro's dick.

I want to see it in HD so badly, but I do not believe it is possible.  At least not without significant digital intrusion.

That's my personal favorite as well.  Barry Lyndon is pretty much my second favorite due to loving the literature of the period.

I've seen a remastered film print of Barry Lyndon in a theater, and it looked pretty incredible. The candlelit shots are something really worth seeing if you have a chance.

Never liked this film too much, I'm just not that into the time period or period pieces in general.

Ironically, the duel towards the end of the film is one of my favorite scenes in a Kubrick film.

A Clockwork Orange is my favorite film by him.
