I only read the con, but you are missing the desolate planets with a pallet swap they call side missions, or the 3 indoor environments for those side missions.

I hope they hurry up ME2.

mass effect is a good game, and I agree about the combat system, I thought it was fucking awesome. There was one or two shops which had some awesome gear though.

IT was ok. The story sucked dick, the party members could've been more interesting, and it's all over in 15 hours because te side quests are torture for the most part.

I thought the story was good, it was just very by the book and for the masses, but the universe seemed fully fleshed out. The side missions were absolutely terrible and the vehicle segments were not very fun.

The prob i have with the story is that it's all pretty generic, uninteresting, been there done that sci fi. And although it seems a lot of thought has been put into the universe, how big did it really feel during the game? It didn't feel epic at all, it felt like the words coming out didn't match what was really happening, you barelly got into contact with multiple species, and they were hardly relevant to the story, and the universe we played in seemed filled with human characters, etc

It was as epic as Gears of War 1, heck, maybe even less.

Im on demi's side here. I found the combat clunky, the dialogue tree options didnt reflect what was ever actually said, the vehicle stuff was ARGH and the story was functional at best. On the flip side the music was nice and the visuals were grand.

I don't know.  When I was playing it when I first got it, I was having a blast and really getting into the story they created.  But deep down I had a feeling that the gameplay was pretty uninspired and the environments were pure color swaps.

I had fun, but I've had absolutely no desire to revisit it like I have countlessly with KotOR.

That was the VERY POINT of the dialogue circle.

smh @ MAF, lyte or whoever you are

How is me picking what I WANT to say and not having it actually said by the character the very point of anything. I choose: Shut the fuck up if you wanna live, they say 'please be quiet'.

The whole 'system' is pretty disingenuous.

The system at times does get bad.  The only bad point I got was when I chose an option, and my guy fucking shot and killed the enemy in front of me.  I thought I was just going to say "He doesn't deserve to live" like a badass, not shoot his ass right then and there.

I found that the following things soured me pretty quickly halfway through Mass Effect-

A) Class skills and the leveling system lacked any real impact (read: "omg I can't wait to get to X level so I can use Y new ability' and really failed to distinguish the characters uniquely from others in the same archtype. There were few abilities, spread out in a common fashion across multiple classes, with the end effect being that every character felt similar, and you really couldn't tune and customize your party for exactly what you wanted to do.

B) The itemization was atrocious. Getting new loot should make you about being excited to see what is on the vendor or in the box you just looted, but in reality everything again, felt generic and the same. Upgrades were shamelessly lacking in special abilites or stats that could be better used to differentiate characters and specialize them from others. The item system overall in the game felt like it was designed by amateurs, not a company that has been at the top of the genre for a decade.

C) The side missions-these should be places where you can write little short stories and leverage Mass Effect's great conversation system to put the character in some real moral quandries with some hard choices without breaking the epicness of the main quest. Instead we got moon patrol and finding rocks. Lame. Again, this part felt like it was designed and created by amateurs.

These things really just built up and caused me to put the game down, not even wanting to blitz through the main story to see how it would end (I didn't find the main story very interesting to begin with though). I  really think that from the perspective of someone who enjoys these games for more than just the story, the game was very weak.

Yeah I think with the dialogue wheel the player was more of a psychotic voice in the characters head than the character themselves.

I have a Q4400 with a Radeon X1950PRO and 3GBs of RAM. That good enough to max it?

I skipped it altogether because:

1) It's a Bioware game;
2) I felt like I've seen these designs in sci-fi a million times before;
3) I really didn't feel like another Bioware game with a slide-show framerate.

From threads like these, I'm glad I skipped it.

I could see it as a B- or a B.  I mean, I guess if you stuck to the main story and no the side missions, your experience would be much better.  I am someone who tries to see everything and do everything, so when they give me the option for side quests, I do them.  It just sucks that 90% of these side missions are garbage.  Only one of them is good, and you should know which one I'm talking about.

Apparently the vehicle was much better on the PC.  The combat was janky as hell, but at least you can exploit it.  Like, if you are behind a wall, but your reticle is pointing outside, and despite this making no logical sense what so ever, you can still kill enemies that way.  I actually got through the entire game without realizing you could use grenades.  Who the fuck puts grenade on the select button? what a waste.

And fuck elevators.  If that is the future, then nuke the Earth today.

One of my favorite games this gen but has a lot of room for improvement.

I think that that they would be wise to dump the side quest planets altogether and focus completely on making the main quest planets as full and fleshed out as they can. The Citadel in and of itself is an area that a game can take place in, but in the game it feels small and empty compared to the fact we are told about it. I liked things like walking through the wards and being able to go into clubs and shit, just flesh that stuff out a bit more.

No way does it beat Kotor for me, if you consider that Kotor was a last-gen title that came out in 2003 then it's not even close. I wish that Bioware would break away from the simple, almost condescending "good side"/"bad side" stuff. The fact that the good and bad dialogue options are in the same places the entire game, and sometimes are blue and red colored, is just ridiculous, and feels very dated.

To everyone that passed the game because of some internet thread: do not.

I'd still recommend the PC version when asked whether the game was any good. I'd just make sure to let people know where the game is really strong (presentation, graphics) and where it is somewhat weak (the points I mentioned, which are to be honest not a huge thing for 90% of RPG fans out there).

i just started playing this.  visuals are dissapointing unless the light is shining just right in a dialog scene (playing on ultra high settings on PC) -- most of the time it's just too muddy.  i just got accepted as a spectra or whatever.  combat's pretty meh (though i guess it's alright for an RPG) -- i went with vanguard -- that's the viable class, right?  i've already run into AI pathing problems where wrex decided to get himself stuck behind a crate.  AI buddies seem pretty dumb/useless and the enemies are no smarter.  so far all my weapons have been reskins of the same models.  some of the armor looks neat - especially for the other races.

when does it get better?
