Cost of repairing a 360 that is out of warranty?

Stupid question then, is there an automatic warranty on the repairs that have been made? Meaning, when it RRODs and I send it in, am I covered for a time after receiving the repaired system?

It's probably the standard 90 days or original warranty, whichever is longer

If you have to worry about eventually paying to fix an old 360, why not just buy one of the newer, more reliable 360s?  You can find the 20gb models w/HDMI new for $250 to $299. 

I upgraded to a HDMI 360 about a yr ago and it's still running strong despite the hot SoCal temps and being used much more often than my other consoles.

This is a "Premium" for $150, which is almost too good to pass up. Only thing is, I've already owned two 360s, both of which RROD'd. So it becomes a matter of figuring out if it's worth the cost of possible repairs, or if the initial low price is going to bite me in the ass. I need one for Gears 2 and Fable 2, and I still haven't been able to finish Halo 3.

Anyway, I somehow recall something about warranties restarting or whatever when something is fixed. That might be me misremembering, as Roger Clemens would say, and it's not like I have time to go digging through the internets looking (although I did a single search on google to no avail). Plus we're still three months short on 3 years for the launch systems, so the existing warranty could be good for a while longer, depending on when it was built.

At any rate, it seems fixing another RROD out-of-warranty would likely put your cost up there with just buying a new system.

How far did you get?  You might not have missed much.   Up until the last two levels, Halo 3 is the best Halo ever and even one of the best FPSes in recent years.

Hard to believe Halo 3 has been out for almost a year. For a short second there, I thought about getting a used 360 to play the game and then trade it back in. But then I saw the economics of it didn't make too much sense. At the rate of things, my local Best Buy will still be selling cat helmets whenever it is I get around picking up a 360. September or October, maybe.

Screw it, I bought it anyway. If it breaks, oh well. Hopefully it chooses to do so after Fable 2 and Gears 2. I had a loaner 360, but I don't feel good about borrowing that one these days; it's one thing to break your own system, you know?

From some thread I saw the other day, I think November is Dead Space, Fable 2, Gears 2 and Fallout 3.  Crazy.

You might luck out with a freaky 360 that lives.  My current one has been going for about a year I think, and it's a pre-extra heatsink model.  If it dies in November I don't know what I'd do.

The warranty on RROD 360 systems was extended to 3 years from the date of purchase.  The 360 launched in November 2005.  It's impossible for you to have a system that is out of its warranty.  Even if you bought a system that was manufactured very early on (October/November '05), you will probably be able to complete Fable and GoW before the warranty expires.

Remember though that the warranty is only for RROD.  If the disk drive dies or something it might not be covered.

Works fine for me. Well, in Resistance and COD4, but then those are about the only two FPS on the system with some thought to them. The 360 controller is certainly better for that game type, but the evils of the DS design are greatly exaggerated. I played COD4 briefly on PC, and there was some weird shit going on in those games. The rest of the multiplatform games, I'm getting Mirror's Edge on PS3 as I doubt there will be many differences, and if I'm going to play it with a controller, I might as well play the version that actually uses the Sixaxis. We'll see about Dead Space.

Buying Fallout 3 for the PS3?

That's distinguished mentally-challenged, AltogetherAndrews. You have a nice rig, you should play multiplatform games there.

I'm not buying Fallout 3 on any platform. I didn't like Oblivion, and this looks about as interesting as that one.

you can't use generic usb access points, but you can use generic wireless bridges that connect via the ethernet port. don't for fuck's sake buy the microsoft one -- you should be spending $30 or $40, not $100

I just connect my 360 to the PC monitor when I need to download something.  I think the VGA cable is only $10 now if you don't have a mon with a HDMI port.

I remember someone mentioned that a wireless labtop can be used to hookup the 360 w/internet access. You might want to try that out if you want to save money.

the first game is better but if you're playing co-op, then 3 is the best because of online play, skulls, and the legendary difficulty actually adding more enemies as well as making them stronger.  It's a lot less frustrating and more fun.  Especially if you're trying to set a meta-game points record.
