Are more people watching porn now than twenty years ago?
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:57:05 PM »
According to the General Social Survey, no!

The percentage of men and women watching porn peaked in 1987!

Maybe it's a generational thing?

The percentage of 18-30 year olds who haven't watched porn in last year:
1986: 61.8%
1996: 57.0%
2006: 60.6%

Some people don't own televisions and don't have access to the internet. Some poeple are asexuals. Some people are AMSIH.

It's conceivable that some people don't watch porn.

I don't think it has gone down.  With the internet, access to porn is easier than ever.  I wouldn't doubt that some people haven't looked at porn in the past year but 1987 should not be the peak.  It should be the late 90s or early 00s.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that that high a percentage of people haven't watched porn in the last year.

I don't think I know anyone, male or female, who hasn't seen porn in the last year.

More porn is being consumed today, but that's not the issue here: The issue is whether more people are watching porn today. (the distinction is subtle)

Honestly, do you expect me to believe that you know the porn viewing habits of every single person you know.

Anyway, how many fundies do you know? How many Orthodox Jews do you know?

The only explanation is that more people are lying. Why would more people lie now than twenty years ago. Porn was more taboo twenty years ago; if anything, people would have been more likely to lie about it in the past.

Bullshit.  Is this survey not taking the internet into account or something?

Internet viewing is included. According to Nielsen data, which isn't self reported data, 3/4 of internet users don't visit porn sites.

Just because the data is counter intuitive, doesn't make it false.

Your sample of one person is convincing.

As I wrote earlier, porn viewers probably consume more porn than porn viewers of the 80's. That, however, doesn't mean there are more porn viewers.

Forget that, I am talking about all the "humor" or sites like Maxim and such that have porn or near-porn stuff all over them.  You can find porn on a search engine site too.  Is Google a porn site?

Maxim is hardly porn, and certainly not hardcore-porn.

Most people use google to look for non-porn related sites; I don't think you could count google as porn site. If you did, then someone who searched for "Winnipeg Mennonite churches" on google would be surfing a porn site.

I don't know how Nielsen deals with this; however, I assume people who search for porn on google eventually click on the links, and then visit actual porn sites, which Nielsen then registers.

My flatmate is completely asexual (or closet homo). Never watches porn or looks at titty mags or anything. And if I say something like 'hey, check out this babe' he ignores me or says something like 'I don't care'

The sample size is over 25,000 people, which is a fairly large sample. Unless the GSS changed its methodology in the last twenty years, there's no reason to say the study is flawed.

One would think with easier access more porn would be consumed, and it probably is. But are more people consuming porn? NO

I guess the only explanation I could think of then is that all the porn viewers congregate in the same areas, giving the apparently false impression that porn really is mainstream.

The article didn't explain the factors that caused porn viewing to drop.  They showed Maxim and FHM subs dropping but that has more to do with the magazines being total shit in every aspect.

We tend to associate with people who are similar to ourselves. This creates a sample bias.

the growth of religious fundamentalism in the US might be a factor.

Yeahh petite, shaven women is definitely not my thing, all those girls are supposedly certified 18+, but they probably could use the likes of tiny18 as a snare site to put people on watch lists or some shit. They could probably do the same with people who watch porn with small Japanese girls in. I always found the gestural behaviour and noises in Japanese porn kind of disturbing. I'm mainly into home videos. I like amateur style footage, no professional makeup, no background music, no superfluous story, just gritty real-life sex. Girl-next-door type girls, mid-size or larger women no problem. I have a particular fetish for mixed race women and black women (I'm white), like hearing believable orgasms, and other squelchy sex sounds, and occasionally like seeing people get railed by ludicrously large penises. I love porn. I can't imagine life without it.

submityourflicks is fantastic... i check it every day. The top rated and categories sections are useful also.
Yuvutu.com is another good amateur one... I prefer both of those sites to other YouPorn-clones, which have just become sort of commercialised.

I whack off at least 3 times a day. More if I've been drinking the night before. TMI perhaps, but I'm thinking it may be indicative of an addiction.

Going back to the topic at hand then, to try and rectify my unwitting derailing efforts thus far...

I'll just say I still find this shocking / interesting. Here in the UK, there was a report by OFCOM recently (the government telecommunications body) that said we are communicating using the internet more than ever -- computer usage is up, laptop usage is up, mobile internnet usage is way up... I assume this ever increasing dependence on the technology for communication is not just a UK-thing, but a worldwide thing, and yet - people aren't necessarily viewing more porn? Its crazy that the peak in one of those graphs is in the 80s. Perhaps its the case that people (who aren't me) are sort of desensitised to porn, its everywhere, so they're almost bored of it. I think it probably has its enthusiasts just like everything else, so what you guys are saying about communities thinking its more commonly viewed than it is would factor in there, and then also there's a demographic of people who want and/or need to consume porn. Light internet users, with lives and lovers of their own, don't really need porn as much as those who are on it more frequently, or might bare some kind of sexual addiction(s).
