First off, whatever asshole did that video doesn't know not jack or shit about anything if he insults height required to play in the NBA. Mugsy Bogues and his 5'3" could get up in your asshole if you if you played him; and it isn't like he is some low profile player or anything, he was in Space Jam...SPACE JAM.

Secondly, NO SHIT GAME PLAY MATTERS, GENIUS! What is so wrong about having story, good graphics, and other aspects enhance the experience even further? nothing, thats what.  And not to forget about how again this is another case of an ignorant bastard thinking 'better tech = ONLY better graphics'.

Fuck this shit, yo.  And fuck that fucking drone bastard in Bionic Commando;  I'll eat his heart.

This is a show? like on G4 or something like that?
just an internet show.  has its high points and its low points.  overall one of the better internet shows i've seen, but i'm not going to say it's amazing or anything.

having kept up with the series and his character, i know when he's making a point or just personifying the 'uber gamer' architype.

there's some decent points made in the parody intro.  i think most games today are, like he describes, are just interactive B-level movies.  where i differ in opinion with him is that, unlike him, i do see value in games doing more than be challenging games; i do think there's a place for games that push the medium in terms of immersion, narrative, and cinematic quality.  but i don't think most games today do that, or even try to.  most games today are popcorn flicks with little challenge.

he describes the 'games of old' as being challenging and requiring a learning of new gameplay mechanics.  there are some examples of games today that do accomplish this, but i think most games are worried too much about being accessible.  i mean, just look at all the backlash for BCR.  personally i never played the original, but i'm loving it so far and the challenge rooms are almost my favorite part of the game because i'm mastering a gameplay mechanic i hadn't before.  but you do see a ton of people complaining about the controls and it's all because they have been trained by recent games that don't offer a real challenge or a need to learn anything.  and it's not like i think i'm immune to this--i couldn't even beat mega man 2 in the anniversary edition even though i was beating it as a child (though, i think the ps2 version has some slight input lag--feels awful).

i do think Portal is a great game, but i think he's right when he calls out the masses and their hailing it as some sort of second coming.

the part i agree with wholeheartedly is his rant on the people who complain about hardcore gamers (including the video game journalists).  i get so annoyed watching journalists play games because they always suck so bad at them.  you even hear them on podcasts complaining about how they get killed online so they, of all things, avoid it all together unless they can play with their noobish jouranlistic buddies.

though his off-shoot on 'talent' was a bit much.

the problem with the self appointed "hardcore" though is they are almost all, to a man, complete wankers.

some of my favourite misguided shit :

1) the misguided notion that machines like the SNES and Genesis were no stop parades of AAA+ games unlike today.  ::) There was at least as much shit on the older machines, all that is happening is people are compressing the whole library into one point in time and it suddenly appears to be this carnival of none stop awesome.

2) gobshiting about games they blatantly haven't played : "Rez? it's just a wire frame Space Harrier"

3) fawning over rare games based entirely on their availability rather than their quality as a game : see N.N. Pun on the PC Engine (absolute fucking garbage) , Jungle Park (an unplayable winnet), etc etc.

4) Games that are at least decent that get "disowned" because the "public" have shown an interest. see hilarious "Radiant Silvergun is shit" bollox.

5) THE biggest japafags on the web all happen to be hardcore retro nuts - watch in amazement as some of them brag about "this amazing RPG that none of you have ever played before by <obscure>! I knew about it, you didn't. Sucks to be you lot." followed by "well, i don't understand Japanese but the story is easy to figure out..."  ::)

6) the general premise that if something sold or is popular then, obviously, it's garbage.

7) 3D is evil, every game should be in 2d - with sprites - all made with a maximum res of under 480i in mind. Then - when someone bothers to do this, complain that this is a waste or it should be on a different platform.

8) all handheld games are shit. They can't possibly be good and anyone developing games for them are wasting their and our time.

9) the hilarity of the cock waving! I've had several people cock wave, only to have their epeen not measure up. Then it changes to "oh you are just buying those so you can ebay them, you're just a scalper, you can't have played all those, you aren't as hardcore as me...". It's fucking comical.

I guess i've just had bad experiences in the retro/hardcore scene, maybe jiji has had a few similar experiences too but the scene attracts elitist cocks like flies to a rotting corpse. Go visit one of the many boards and see just exactly how loathsome some of the opinions are.

Oh and yeah, a lot of the hardcore hate portal. It's okay, they are all wrong. I know at least a couple who hate it but haven't played it ("it's just another FPS... yawn").

i'm not really talking about any of that.  and i don't think jeremy was, either.  he didn't cite rare games or even specific classic examples.  they even play recent, big selling titles like brawl and cod4 (despite him criticizing the sequel-syndrome the series has).  and they aren't jfags.  jeremy does do an excessive amount of dickwaving, but that's part of the character he plays in the show--the dickwaving is just part of the comedy routine.  basically, NONE of what you described has relevance to this context.

if you really think about his comparisons, he's talking about people that are generally referred to as 'scrubs.'  the people that whine about the way someone plays instead of adapting to it.  the distinguishment i make is much less about skill and more about a mindset.  there are those that are willing to learn and those that aren't.  in the context of fighting games as an example, using the term "cheap" is like nails scratching a chalkboard.  listen to the latest 1up yours for an example.  they bitch about losing to someone using the same move over and over, or even a single move they think is "cheap"--in the end they decide they'll only play with people they know, and more importantly, they'll only play with people who play by the same idiotic meta-rules as they do.  if someone loses to the same move over and over, they have two ways to walk away from it--they can think, 1: "that was cheap -- i'm not playing them again" or they can think, 2: "i'm going to find a way to counter that."  1 is a scrub's way of thinking.  2 is, in my book, pretty much all that is required to be called "hardcore."

i was waving my arms at the hardcore in general, not at the show.
the problem is that your generalization of "hardcore" is not in line with mine or the show's, which you were replying to.  there's no point in discussing it if we're going to be talking about two entirely different things.

Anways, the show just felt flat - i realise what the point is, and i have mentioned to a few others that there is comedy potential in having a fake internet Hardcore personality, but the characterisation in this doesn't go far enough, it ends up being fairly hohum observations unfortunately.
i assume this is the only episode you've seen.  i'd say most of the good stuff is earlier in the series and that the 'hardcore' persona is getting tired, evident by the direction the series has gone and is going now.  at this point, it's more of a routine, than a focus.

there you go then - it's popular , people like it, people are vocal about it being great... so lets call them out. it's the ultimate hardcore paradox. Portal is legitimately great , the fact lots of people like it should be celebrated. sigh, the hardcore are all insecure prawn cocks.
it's one thing to celebrate portal as a great game.  i think it deserves 9+ all around--i agree that it's one of the best games in a while and i often recommend it as a 'must play' game without hesitation.  but i would agree with jeremy that a 3 hour singleplayer experience is not the height of game design.  i've had better gaming experiences.

edit: it's also worth noting that my philosophy behind games is also multiplayer-focused.  while singleplayer games can be great, i think multiplayer games have far more potential in the art of gameplay.
