Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Demo This Week

(Image removed from quote.)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, LucasArts announced that a demo of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed would be released sometime in August.  Well, they’ve made good on that announcement. The demo, will be unleashed this Thursday onto the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace.

The level in the demo takes place on a special version of the Tie Fighter Construction Facility. It will feature a few more force powers unlocked and an ending that’s diffrent then in the actual game. Just don’t expect anything too spectacular, the ending is probably just a screen telling you to buy the full game when its unleashed September 16th.

All the media Ive seen of this game is really forcing me to be open to the idea that this might actually be good. Hopefully the demo is solid because I really need something to wash the taste of the latest ‘Clone Wars‘ movie out of my mouth.

7.5 is good for a star wars game and better than any other product recently. If I can Force push everything and destroy droids I'll never tire of it.

Videos on IGN make the game seem much better.  The guy playing seems like he has a better grasp on how to use both the light saber and force powers in unison instead of standing around like a dumbass.

the camera is really bad. I like the powers but you can't really do much with them. not much enemy variety, enemy attack variety, or objects in the demo to throw. it's really like three different types of containers. I definitely did have fun though, but by the end of the demo I was pretty satisfied. Will gamefly.

I enjoyed the demo quite a bit.  Camera is bad, but after turning up the speed all the way, it got a bit better.  Using the force is awesome.  The best moment was picking up a guy, him grabbing a crate, and since I was too weak to hold them both, I just held them over the edge and watched them both slowly sink into the the abyss.

I didn't have any problem with the camera but I had a hard time trying to wrap my head around the grip/move/throw controls.  Just seemed awkward to me.

Now this is a God of War clone done right.  Very good shit here, people.  I really got a kick out of the small details like burn marks on the floor from your light-saber, triwling your saber to repel blaster shots, etc.  I only had one guy hold onto something when I tried to force grip them.  It was pretty awesome.   :lol

I hope the full game is full of little surprises like we saw in the tie-fighter bay.  Moving those support beams with the force in order to have the tie-fighters slam into them was awesome.  I want to see a ton of stuff like that, but not have it laid right out in front of you all the time.  Have it be there if you're looking for it.

Anyway, the demo put the game on my radar.  I'm definitely considering this as a buy now.

**edit** Forgot to say, no camera problems for me.

The force control is really awkward at first because it isn't normally how you would associate a 'gravity gun' mechanic to work.  Basically:

Left Stick = X axis
Right Stick = Y axis

Forget about movement control entirely and just remember that whatever direct you point in on any stick before flinging will make the person/object fling in that direct.  So if you want someone to be thrown forward, you have to be pressing forward on the left stick.

the gameplay just feels a bit unpolished. saber combat is very basic and there's no real need to use more advanced techniques (like combining push/grab/lightning with saber)... especially when a lot of them make you more vulnerable to laser fire. i might go back and try it on the hardest difficulty to see if it offers more of a cohesive challenge. right now there's no real reason to use one attack over the other. if there is a more complex dodging/blocking system in the game, i didn't find it.

the euphoria aspect didn't really come into play much at all. there's no interesting materials in the demo level, so no splintering wood or anything -- just very basic crates and boxes from the future that blow up like they've blown up for 10 years in games. i carried a guy over to another so they'd hold eachother -- it was neat i guess, but there's no real reason for me to do it again. you could force push to bust doors open, but it felt more like a pre-built animation than real-time metal bending. same thing went for the beams in the tie-fighter section -- you could pull a beam away and infront of a tie fighter and it would crash.... but you could also just grab the tie-fighter itself and throw it into the ground, so again there's little reason to use other methods because it takes a long time and you're vulnerable.

the lock on didn't seem to be worth it. it even cost me when it auto-followed a guy off a ledge to my death -- never had a problem like that when i ignored the lock on all together and just played manually.

bodies dissappear after like 3 seconds.  there's NO severed limbs.  you're supposed to be fucking darth vader's apprentice with a lightsaber but it's like you're swining a foam bat around.  the AI was like the AI in dynasty warriors -- super stupid.

the jedi knight games were much better.

I'm still not sold on it yet. It looks like it's shaping up to be one of those games that tries to through in a bunch of different attacks, but all of them end up feeling either basic [lightsaber], cool but slightly unwieldy/awkward and not meant for fast-paced action [force lift/throw, force push], or somewhat useless [force lightning]. The could be fun, however, I could easily see it becoming monotonous after the first few hours.

I was really looking forward to this game, and after breezing through the demo I still am.  But, I'm also worried it will get really repetitive, really fast.  Hopefully the narrative is interesting and there are more gameplay mechanics that have yet to be revealed.  I imagine the Apprentice will start off with very limited moves compared to what is available in the demo.  Seeing some of the cool combos in the movie at the end made me want to experiment more with the combat, even if it's not necessary.

Camera sucks, hope that's better in the final.  Also, the graphics didn't look quite as good as I anticipated, although they do look great.  I'm looking forward to seeing the different levels/planets hinted at in the movie.

All in all it could definitely be worse.  I will say five min into the demo I was wondering if this is the SW game we've all been waiting for, so there is definitely potential.  It just depends how 'fresh' they can keep the gameplay.  I was let down seeing the qte elements at the boss, hopefully they get a little more creative than that in other places.

Game Informer said you get points to upgrade skills or something similar to that (the issue is in the bathroom, probably covered in vomit), so I'd wager there's more to it than what is in the demo.

I was kinda looking forward to this, too.  After playing the demo, I can cross it off the release list and wait until its half price.  The controls when force throwing objects just feel imprecise.  The visuals aren't too hot (this is middle of the road next gen--nothing bad, nothing great), and that camera doesn't snap around the way it needs to.  At my most objective, going by the demo, this feels like a game even more problematic than Too Human, and since it is more of a straight up action game, I bet it gets fucking curseworthy frustrating.

Crates Crates Crates

He called the main character Cratoes cause he throws crates and does QTEs

Oh, also, the environmental destruction in the game is really shitty.  There's like one thing in every room that breaks.  Most of the crates you throw around don't break or show damage, either.  That disappointed me.

I was not paying attention to this game at all, and all I really knew of it was all those technicolour screens that were released.

But playing through the demo has now got me really interested.  Sounds are nice and heavy, and it looks pretty nice.  The controls and force powers felt great, and I really like the way he moves with a lightsaber.  The force powers make me feel a bit like I did in Fable with the spell that knocked everyone back - like a badass.

It's on my maybe-buy list now, which sucks because there's already too much other stuff coming out. :(

Yeah, it's not nearly as 'organic' as we were led to believe.  I still have hopes that the demo is just a small taste, though.

I got the level up force push too, it was pretty cool.  I don't know, I thought you would just be able to destroy everything in the environment when the whole game feels scripted.  The qte to defeat the at-st was lame as shit, too.

Demi, has Robby played the whole game or just the demo?

I hate-hate-hate the way there's a brief "pause" when you hit someone with the Lightsaber. I liked the QTE, I thought it was well integrated, but I died about 15 times before I realized there was a QTE- I was just chucking boxes at it, haha.

I'm curious myself.  While they promised more organic destruction, one must also consider the level presented in the demo.  Hopefully more organic areas offer a bit more.  Of course, the demo basically WAS almost entirely composed of throwing crates at enemies.

I mean, I liked the way that it just kind of showed up as part of the action instead of being a "cinema" ala RE4 or Shenmue. I wish there'd been some kind of signal to prompt the player, but maybe the more you play the more you realize, "Oh, this is a QTE situation". It's the best integration of QTE into gameplay I've ever seen.

PC gamer said that the game is most likely coming to the PC.  It's possible that the PC version will have Geforce PhysX since Nvidia is pushing devs hard to incorporate it.

I doubt a PC version would add much more in the way of physics simply due to the way the levels of designed.  They've basically created static levels with physics based objects scattered within.  You can't actually do anything to the basic structure of the level and that wouldn't change in a port.  They might add MORE objects or something.

I still think Crysis does it better than any other game in that they actually build structures out of materials that can be destroyed.  When coupled with the fantastic object motion blur, you have a very impressive looking physics system.  Red Faction Guerilla is actually reasonably close, though, in that it uses the same basic idea (it doesn't look as nice in motion but the structures you can damage seem larger and more complex).

I suppose the limitation of the CryEngine is that the method used for constructing huts and the like wouldn't really translate to large buildings.  None of the larger structures in Crysis can be touched.  Of course, I don't really think that's necessary for enjoyable physics action.

There are levels where destructability is more present.
