Walking Dead - TPB volume 8

 :o
...  :o !!!

Holy crap, this is pretty much the best and worst one can hope for from zombie fiction. In a zombie movie things are at least over, for better or worse, at the end of the ninety minutes. Kirkman's ongoing zombie fiction potentially means no-one is safe, everyone is at risk, and you can never know when it's going to end. I can't believe where he took this with the big wrap up at the prison.

I read this latest collected volume on the plane back from vacation, and was stunned at how completely transported I was to that dystopian landscape. I was surprised to look up and still find myself on a plane, surrounded by breathing humans.

It's stunning that the whole gang may be wiped out, and even more frightening to think what must be happening to the father and son. For a long while I'd assumed that the boy might die, and honestly I thought the baby might not make it, but I'd always assumed they'd leave his harping wife hanging off from him forever. It also looked like the Tom Savini stand-in governor was going to get ANOTHER reprieve... thank god for small favors.

His intent becomes very clear when you realize that The Walking Dead

refers to the survivors, not the zombies

It's out, it's terrifying.

Yeah, Cormacaroni -- Rick actually says that at one point. I wasn't fond of it at the time, as it was such an over-the-top splash page, but now I like it.

Love zombies.

Favorite monster.

Will put up with the most putrid of movies as long as zombies are in it.

Have read and adored all of the zombie survival guide and world war z. Even read some of the terrible fucking zombie novels they pimp on Evil Avatar every now and then.

And despite all that, I just cannot enjoy Walking Dead. I dunno. Apparently this Kirkman fella is like the William Shakespeare of comic books. I don't know much about them anymore, but I do know his name pops up practically every time someone starts referring to them as art. But I just don't feel it.

I own 3 TWD paperbacks. They had just finally cleared the prison, I think, when I gave up on the series. I think the thing that got to me was that all of the characters sounded identical. I mean maybe that makes sense, maybe they all have adopted a kind of similar outlook on life, and it tempers their dialog. But the shit just irked me. Big black dude, small town cop, old man banging young girl, depressed widower, bitchy wife: it's like they all spoke the same damn way.

Draft - remember they all come from a relatively small geographical area, what with the planes not flying anymore etc. Also, people in close proximity to each other every minute of the day actually do start talking like each other. (it happens on EB for sure).

But yes, if every line of dialog is tortuous to you, don't feel bad about not continuing. It's a great comic, but not great art or anything.

I'll sell you my copy of Volume 1. Should be in pretty good condition. I don't know if I'd call it mint or near mint (or even what those really mean) but I've only read it a couple times. Otherwise it chills on a bookshelf.
