Let's say you were a bad bird watcher who misidentified birds from far away and from up close. If you mistook a swift for a swallow when it was 200 yards away but then mistook that same swift for a swallow when it was 5 yards away, you would have the mistaken impression that you were really good at identifying birds from far away.

Why can't he compare it the the models of people he has already meet that gave similar first impressions?  Say he meets Joe.  He likes Joe.  Has butt sex with Joe.  Likes Joe a lot and really gets the know the real Joe.  Then he meets Adam who he finds is a lot like Joe.  Couldn't he base is predictions on Adams deeper character based off of Joes if he sees similar characteristics?  Wouldn't this work well percent wise had their been a lot of people with the character type Joe. 

This way he is able to have guess into the insight of a persons true identity with out having anything other than first impressions.  Also if he has the ability to ignore common things people due when first meetings that might be out of character for them such as nervousness ect. which he would gain by judging is first impressions off of the previous Joes to how they turned out then he could avoid a bird watching scenario.

I did meet a v. pretty girl in a bar the other day, it was kinda neat because she was initially there with her boyfriend, and when he left she told her she'd be out in a minute, then proceeded to stay there for 45 mins. talking to me.  he eventually came back and was like OH WHEN YOU SAID A MINUTE I FIGURED HALF AN HOUR WOULD BE ENOUGH BUT APPARENTLY NOT, and then she STILL stayed and talked to me for another half hour.  i heard him trying to chew her out over it later as I left, she was like "we were having a really good conversation, fuck off"
