Should I buy a PSP or PS3?
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:00:14 PM »
I want both, but common sense dictates I should only buy one.  I could get a God of War PSP + a small library of games for the price of a 40 gig PS3, but Little Big Planet and Valkyria Chronicles look so awesome :-\.  HELP ME EVILBORE.

Also, can the God of War PSPs run homebrew?  Don't wanna pirate PSP games, but I'd like to run emulators and stuff.

Emulating is pirating.  Might as well go all the way.

I have the GOW PSP.  It's beautiful but I rarely use it.

At least the PS3 is used to play Blu-rays.  And MGS4 is way better than MGS PSP.

My final advice:

Buy a PC with a Blu-ray drive!

I'd go with a PS3. Great games, great media hub, video store, web browser, blu ray.... I'd wait for the 80gb version of the 40gb though.

PS3. At least there are actually somewhat interesting games to buy for it, when the PSP has zero.

get a psp+emulators.  hundreds upon hundreds of hours of fun right there.  wait a while for the ps3 to drop in price and build up a library before getting one.

Well, they're the same price, so flip a coin.

No, I kid.   ;)

I'd buy the PS3.  I have both, and love them, but I think there's more substance to the PS3.  I mostly have my PSP for internet browsing in bed, and collecting classics that are re-released on it.  Things like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Powerstone Collection, Capcom Classics, Metal Slug Anthology, Castlevania, etc.  There's also really great PSP exclusives like Guilty Gear Judgement, Brave Story, and of course God of War.

That said, my PS3 is something I play pretty regularly.  I love the store and downloading new demos and stuff all the time.  Its like having a 360 that exists in some alternate universe.  :)  Then the occassional multi-platform game comes out and you'll get it for PS3 instead.  (Soul Calibur 4 for example, then again, multiplayer games are typically better on 360)  If I were you, I'd try to get a 60GB for backward compatibility. They're totally money.

apparently there's an unhackable psp board revision -- so do some research if you go that route

Get a PS3.  The games library is better already.

Wait for the 80GB core PS3 which is incoming to stores now.  It is replacing the 40GB core and will also retail at $399.99.

PSP has too many 3D games and only one analog stick.  God I with Sony would make a revision already.

the problem with the psp is that it's hard to think there'll be more games coming out given its current state. i've seen an article talking about a rumored "psp revival" and that the square announcements some weeks ago may be the beginning of it, but it's still just a rumor and could turn out to be no more than wishful thinking.

the ps3 has less interesting games at this point but the library should improve more than the psp's as time passes. if you aren't playing the psp outside and you'd rather have more games in the future than right now, the ps3 is the best choice unless you already own a x360.

also, there are some new psps that can't be hacked and there doesn't seem to be a way to tell them apart afaik.

Sounds like you're more interested in the PSP's games than in the PS3's.  What are you hesitating about?

The PSP is a finer handheld than the PS3 is a console.  However, imo, the PS3 has a better library, especially if you already have a PS2.

Many of the PSP's games are just downgraded ports of PS2 games.

The GOW PSP is likely hackable.  My friend hacked mine without any problems.

Even if you can't hack it, you have 30 days to return it if you get it from places like CC and Best Buy.

you know that going with the psp is the right decision here. if you already have a 360, that ps3 will just sit collecting dust.

do the right thing man.

Either one is a good choice, but I guess PS3.  Make sure you get a 60 gig or old 80 gig so you can play PS2 games on it.

Biggest reason I would say hold off on the PSP is that there seems to be another revision coming up soon.

I want to mention that even if you don't wanna "import" or emulate games, it's worthwhile to hack your PSP.

I have mine at 333mhz for better performance and I load games on the stick for faster loading times+extra battery life.

Remember to buy a scratch protector if stuff like hairline scratches bother you.  The screen, or rather the screen protector, scratches easily.   I don't care myself as I prefer a clearer screen.

You'll kick yourself in the balls when you realized there is nothing to play on PSP outside of classic games.  You could play all these games on a 5 year old pc.

Well, there are some interesting games on PSP.  Too bad all the 3D games are hampered by having only one analog nub and the response time on the one nub is pure shit.

that would be a dumb fucking reason to hold off on getting one.

The first PSP to the second was a pretty big jump, and while this jump from the second to third might not be as big, it is still worth holding off if you are on the edge.  And it is really dense to think that the PSP will ever be 100% with no change to hack it.  I would have thought you people would have learned by now that if there is a way to crack something, it will be done.  Even the PS3 was done last week.

I don't understand why there aren't more J-RPGS for the PSP.  It's like the perfect system for them.

Because Japanese developers are bastards who probably don't want to spend a budget on a PSP RPG when they can go for a full console one, or a DS one.  The exclusive RPG that are on the PSP are all pretty bad.  It is also funny how the biggest one, Crisis Core, ended up being shit.

How could people possibly be recommending PS3 over a PSP, especially if he already has a 360? PSP has some nice niche titles available - Gradius Portable, Every Extend Extra, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Megaman Powered Up, not to mention loading it with emus will give you waaaaay more fun than anything on the PS3 currently excepting MGS4.

Yeah I'll go jump off the cliff now.  I just read he has a 360, so this minimizes the impact of getting a PS3 now unless you are into blu ray and hdtv.

Anyway, I've always had a little bit of rage towards the PSP when sony designed a 3D system with a shitty 3d control mechanism.  I really haven't dug too deep into its library since I don't own one, and the games I want (God of War, Ratchet) I would rather buy on PSN and play on my PS3.

It was more a question to ask for suggestions of these supposed "diamond in the rough" PSP games.  I've glanced over the entire PSP lineup of games, but I haven't gone in depth to see how each one ticks.  Mainly since after the initial glance I don't find anything too appealing.

From left to right:
1) Piece of shit no matter what system its on
2) Also on 360
3) Also on 360
4) Also on 360
5) Amazing game, I'll give you this one
6) Also on 360
7) Was extremely underwhelmed with the demo
8) Hated the demo, expected a platform/adventure game but got Gears in the jungle
9) Also on 360 I think?
10) On every system ever including N-GAGE
11) Heard it was disappointing
12) Also on 360
13) Demo was 'meh', apparently the full game is lacking content, but it had some classic Pendulum tracks on it so it gets points for that
14) Demo was also fairly 'meh', supposedly the PSP HSG is much better according to some hardcore HSG fans on this board

To be fair, if you are a baseball fan, MLB 08 The Show is worth owning a PS3 for.  Game is flat out amazing.

MGS4 is the only PS3 exclusive title that I really dig.  It's hard for me to enjoy games like Resistance or Uncharted on the PS3 'cause the PS3 analog sticks suck ass.

Luved the MLB demo but don't really have time to learn such a deep game.

I would agree if it was a minimal update, but there isn't any real big news about it yet.  It also isn't like if he waited a bit longer and saw what the new PSP had, that the old one would go away.  Again, I think the jump from the PSP to the slimmer PSP is pretty big.

And I still stick by my choice of the PS3 if this guy can get one that has BC.  (I am assuming he didn't have a PS2)

I had a friend who was contemplating the same decision a few months ago. I told him to buy a PSP. He didn't follow my advice, and he bought a PS3 for FFXIII and "Kingdom Hearts 3".

Today, a few months later, FFXIII is announced to be available on another system, and while Kingdom Hearts 3 isn't announced for any system, what is essentially the third Kingdom Hearts is coming out on the PSP (and it looks beautiful). Needless to say, I scold him for his decision to this day.

TL;DR - get a PSP. Many more games, cheaper, and I believe it's an overall better system.

If your talking the current 80gb that comes packed with MGS4 then its PS2 BC, memory card readers, more USB ports

If your talking the 80gb that should be out soon then its just a greater HD size than the 40gb

PS3 SKU madness reaches a new peak...

There is no model with ps2-bc on sale in europe though, isn't it? I want to know what all the fuss on SotC is about...

But maybe i should just get a cheapo PS2 somewhere, play some of the games i missed last gen, and get rid of it soon afterwards...

If your in Europe then no BC, so the new 80 coming is basically a 40 with more space.

I forgot about the Euro side of this answer, sorry

I would definitely buy a PSP, even if you can't hack it yet. Last fall I played it more than any other platform and there are plenty of quality titles. I would recommend Crush, Brave Story, FFT, Jeanne Darc to start with.
