Favorite Teas
« on: August 20, 2008, 12:57:02 AM »
Since i've had to give up two things I love (Alcohol and Coffee), i've been drinking a lot of teas, here's my cupboard:

Tazo Awake (good for mornings - obviously)

STASH Chamomile (good for evenings, I really dont like most chamomile blends, so i just go for straight up chamomile)

STASH Peach Black Tea (omg good flavor and smell - I drink this stuff on weekends or at work)

Tazo Refresh (one mint tea is as good as any others, I just buy this one out of habit - good for an upset stomach)

Choice Ban-cha Tea (I actually dropped STASH's Organic Green Tea for this stuff. Toasted Green Tea > Green Tea)

Twinings Oolong Tea & Darjeeling Tea (When im in the mood for something light)

I've tried Choice's Twig Tea and some weird Ginger Tea and both were gross. Twig Tea tastes like a really crummy Ban-cha and Ginger Tea is way too fucking strong and weird tasting for me. Ginger supposedly is good for the nerves.

Green Tea with Lemon. I don't actually like it, but I hear it's good for me.

Twinings Earl Grey with milk is always a banger after a cold, drunken night.

Hate hate hate chamomile.

I had to stop drinking the ol Earl, because I loved it too much, and its strength made my stomach go urp. Chamomile is good for a cup at night, but no more than that. It + Valerian = zzz MOST nights, unless of course payday is the next day then im just wide eyed like its christmas or some shit.

Do you drink 3/5ths of a cup or 6/10ths?

Give Dragonwell a try.  It's a nice tasting tea with many good health benefits.  But the range in its quality is quite drastic, so you might have to try a few brands before getting one you like.

Green, straight. I usually have looseleaf, but I've got a little can of the matcha powder that I haven't had much of yet.  I like genmai quite a bit.

Ito En sells a lot of bottled, unsweetened teas - green, oolong, and others - in the US that are way tasty.  I like their oolong better than any of the bagged oolong I've had - including Twinings' oolong up there - but some of the fancier oolong I've had in cafes is delicious. And the green jasmine blend is to die for. Ito En has some stiffer green brews that are on the Japanese market and that have been sold canned in the US under the Dr. Weil label that are just awesome.

Mugicha (barley tea) is great. I don't know what makes it quite so refreshing, but it just is.  I'm not as good at making it as my friend, though.

I have a canister of Russian Kousmischoff tea that is wonderful and slightly citrusy, and it's great with a bit of apricot jam in it.

I'm not a fan of bagged chais. I used to have the chai at Starbucks/Borders a lot, but recently I've tried Third Street Chai's Ginger Spice liquid concentrate, and now everything else is too sweet.  I like the strong, spicy stuff, in chai latte form.

Get some chai from an Indian store.  It's yummy.  It'll need some milk and sugar though.

I love tea

Gunpowder teas, black teas, oolong and pu-erhs.

http://www.hinastea.com/

This place has great teas. I currently have some of their Morrocan Madness, which as a minty hint to a black tea. Le Marche Spice is a nice flavorful tea as well.  They have many variations of oolong and some great gunpowder teas.

I get this Young Pu-erh often: http://www.hinastea.com/young-pu-erh-3128.html

I am a fan of the russian caravan tea as well: http://www.hinastea.com/czar-nicholas-russian-caravan-4oz-4015.html

For sweet teas..

If you like real licorice flavor, this is a nice tea. The sweetness balances out a cigar, if you go the tea and smoke route.

For a smoky sense..

You can find black gunpowders as well.

Check your local indian/russian/asian markets and find their tea sections.  You'll find the best mass produced stuff this way.

As of note, pu-erh is a very earthy tea. It's a bit harder to find, but I did find a packet variety that was pu-erh with lemon.  It's good iced.

I like chai as well, but I have yet to find a home brand that I enjoy.

I actually prefer the lighter teas since I can generally drink more of it without feeling a bit sick from it. I like the Ban-cha cause I get a kind of darker flavor with the stomach luvin sensibilities of a lighter tea.

Ill check out the links, and there's like two great ethnic markets near work iirc.

more of the oolong/darjeeling/ceylon. These teas tend to be more 'crisp' and little easier on the stomach. Since I drink a lot of tea I save the heavy duty stuff for pick-me-up scenarios.

Black Gunpowder. Tea with condensed milk. Tea with ginger. Chai tea you have to get the spices right so it's a bit iffy.

jarosh and i are pretty big tea fans, but since it's summer we haven't been drinking that much of it lately. we drink a lot in the winter time though.

our tea drawer

we buy our tea in bulk and store them in those airtight steel containers with directions self-printed on the lid.

my favourite is irish breakfast tea. it's a bit stronger than english breakfast.

edit: oh, and as far as chai goes, it's always worked best for us to boil the water with the spices first and then steep the tea afterward. i think that's the way you're traditionally supposed to do it anyhow.

I found an awesome tea place over in Port Jeff that has all sorts of looseleaf teas... in a variety of flavors. My g/f bought me a bag of apple cinnamon rooibos that was real good from there. I love most types of tea - green, white, looseleaf, herbal, chai (go to an Indian grocer and get the stuff, powdered or premade chai is too sweet IMO)... just not a fan of chrysanthemum or echinacea teas.

I brew some green tea from Target, it's not anything spectacular but it's good for me.  I drink a healthy glass every morning.  If I'm trying to enjoy tea, it will be some sweet iced tea.

Buy from my favorite tea shop!: http://www.southsilkroad.com/catalog/teas.php

They have hundreds of teas, the guy who owns the joint is some insane tea guru. The Emerald Buddha is worth dying for. A green tea spiked with lemon grass, coconut and herbs. Mmm.

My wife got hooked on Genmaicha when we were in Japan. Aside from this one green tea I tried at a tea shop in Taito-ku, I've never lked tea. It tastes like dirt to me.  :-\
