Looking to buy a new laptop
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:09:58 PM »
So I've been banging around on my old laptop long enough and I finally decided to break down and buy a new one but I'm looking around for a good deal.  I really only want to spend around $1500 here and while I don't necessarily need a gaming rig being able to play something like Crysis on it at a respectable framerate would be a plus.  I noticed Dell is having a deal going on at the moment with up to 400 bucks off on certain models but their GPU choices are pretty limited and I honestly don't know how something like a Radeon HD 3560 compares to a GeForce 8600M GT.  What's a decent, affordable laptop card?  And what's a good place to buy from?  All I know at the moment besides my price range is that I want though are 4GB of RAM and a Duo T9300 CPU.

Come on Borys.  Give me your polish magic.

yer gonna need an 8800M or better to do crysis justice. that said, i have an 8600M GT in my current laptop, and it's decent: i can run titan quest at medium settings at a smooth clip. i'd aim for better, though: an 8700M or a 9650M (or better), or whatever the ATI mobile equivalent is

Yeah, I don't think a 8600M GT (or whatever that other card is) is quite going to cut it for Crysis. I also have one in my laptop.

I've got a 512mb 7700go in my 18mth old Asus (2.0ghz core 2 duo and 2gb of ram) and it runs TQ at 1650x1080 at almost full detail with some things like refelctions and shadows turned down. It ran Stalker quite well too. My brother has a 256mb 8600 in his Asus and he gets a fucking shocking frame rate in Assasins Creed.

Basically if you want to do any gaming get a performance card. The mid range cards are fucking useless and you'll regret getting one the moment you buy it.

Well, hell.  All the cards I've been looking at are kind of a joke when it comes to DX10. There goes my Crysis fantasy.  I guess I could wait awhile longer but the thing I'm currently using is a piece of crap and I'd really like a new one for work.

Check out the HPs.  You can get a real good system for $1500.  Try to get at least a 512mb GPU.

Yeah, that's going to be an issue since I'm using this mainly for work but I can't resist.

With such a nice screen, you might as well upgrade to Blu-ray.  It'll be a hassle to change the drive later.

Thats an awesome laptop. I think 15.4 is enough screen space but if youre using it for work 17 should be fine.

I got an estimated arrival date of September 10 for my laptop but I was over at Best Buy yesterday and saw the same unit I just bought and I just have three words - holy freaking crap.  They put in Crysis and I couldn't believe how well it ran with the high settings.  Like butta.  And all this just for $1400?  Get the hell outta here.

This thing may convert me back to the PC whore I once was.

Once a PC gamer, always a PC gamer.  You may have lapses into consolism but you shall always come back to the heart of gaming.  :-*
