I've always had more respect for Valve than Blizzard.  Unlike Blizzard, Valve's games not only run well on all systems but also look fantastic on high end hardware.

Valve's model of "dripping" new and free content for their games after release instead of frontloading everything into the boxed product is very smart. It keeps interest for your game high and keeps the people in the game's community engaged in your product even after they have stopped regularly playing it-they might go back and check out the new update and get hooked right back in (and tell their friends "omg playing TF2 again, you need to get this game!").

It's smart. I think paid DLC doesn't work as well because of the cost, which in turn fragments the community. Used game sales are probably to blame here-if they weren't around, I bet we would see more free downloads for games on the consoles.

Options aren't mods, it takes 30 seconds to just right-click the game in Steam, open Properties, and copy the text into the "launch options" menu.

the game's not broken just because you and a couple other pansies get sick playing it on the default option -- especially when you can CHANGE IT. 

console commands are options .  you're not modding the game -- the game was already built with that functionality in place.

The sooner MS starts allowing free updates, the better. It's bad enough that the right to play Xbox360 games online is $50 a year.

Making Valve charge for updates really interferes with Valve's business model for TF2 (and Left 4 Dead as well). It does suck that, in order to protect other companies' business models, you have to artifically increase the price you would charge for a product and change your own business model.

Valve would rather have more copies of Orange Box sold and everyone playing on the same playing field with frequent updates than less copies of Orange Box sold and a fractured-by-DLC multiplayer community. That's pretty understandable, and the situation is pretty much unspinnable suck.

I don't get why Burnout Paradise updates are free then.  That just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The only way I can understand it is that the there will be new achievements (I know the TF2 specific ones are there, but I mean the actual MS Achievement Points), and Microsoft isn't willing to let people get achievement points without paying money somehow.
