Shenmue - Stand and be counted
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:43:18 PM »
Fuck the haters. I've never been so excited to go home every day and play a game than I have been with Shenmue.

Why do people hate this game? I've heard complaints about it being "boring," but there are very few times when you're stuck waiting for awhile, and even then you can just hang in the arcade or something. And apparently that problem (not being able to skip time) is fixed in Shenmue 2 (which I still need to get a hold of, grr).

I especially love the forklift bit. I dreaded getting a job because I thought it would be boring as fuck (like irl lol), but it's really fun and the time passes by really fast - perhaps too fast. :\

Shenmue is awesome.

I am a big Shenmue fan, and I can totally understand why the haters hate.  In fact, the end of Shenmue 2 is probably one of the saddest moments in gaming for me since I will never know the continuation of the story after that point.

Shenmue 2 had a three hour walk through a forest at the end.  3 hours, real-time.  Timed it myself.

Just one of the many thousands of reasons this series sucks.

That scene was amazing, especially after all you went through to get there.  The stark comparison with other environments you have been in was also amazing.

Is Shenmue 2 BC on the 360?

Ah yes, I saw your thread on GAF.

Indigo Prophecy is better than Shenmue? I assume you only played through the first third of the game.

You'll never, ever get Shenmue III. EVER. Plus, Shenmue I & II were horrible. Space Chanel 5 is an amazing series. PLUS, Ulala has been featured in both the new Sega Tennis game and she's in the new Samba de Amigo. SC5 III is much more likely to happen.

Btw Sega, I need Space Michael in SC5 III plz.

Yeah i wouldn't wanna play it again. I mean, the controls must suck dick, the graphics must be horrendous, and the voice overs will probably sound even worse now.

it could be better than it is , but even in it's current state it's basically Shenmue with all the aimless wandering removed.

Shenmue without Martial Arts =  Fail. Shenmue rocked because of the martial arts, and the story around it.

Yakuza is about gangster beating eah other with bats. Fuck that.

the vast majority of the game is spent asking people a never-ending series of stupid questions that build up to about as much of a story as most games have in the first 30 minutes, all done with voice acting that is on par with the original Resident Evil.  really the only thing worth doing in the game is going to the arcade to play Space Harrier, a game that is ten million times better than that $70 mil shitfest

Against.

I appreciate what Suzuki was doing with the game but it wound up being very boring and repetitive.  The voice acting and the dialog was somewhat grating at times and when it is a game like Shenmue, that means a lot more than the grating voice acting and writing of Sonic Adventure.  Another downside is that it aged quickly as within a couple of years, there were a lot of big box games that did the job better than Shenmue I and II.  I wonder if the technical limitations held back Shenmue a lot more than people think.  If games like State of Emergency and Grand Theft Auto III (not the best examples but hey...) were more wide open and had more thing to do and were released in a short time without the massive budget, I think that if Shenmue were released on the PS2 or Xbox at the very beginning, the game would have been a lot different.

Never really played it after I beat it several years ago but even picking it up for a bargain bin price at EB, it still felt aged.  The biggest downfall was that the game aged way too fast, which was unfortunate, given the vision and the budget allotted towards this game.

Never got Shenmue II in spite of seeing the Xbox version go for $5 several times.

If there would be a Shenmue III, it would have to be an entirely different game than the first two.  The bar has risen considerably since then, especially for "sandbox" games.  It would probably be too expensive so I understand if it never actually happens.

1. When I booted the game and was finally able to move around, I thought the controls were pretty awful as well. But as you play the game, you simply get used to the controls and they work great.

2. The game still looks really good. The only problems are the huge amount of pop-in and the slowdown (some in Dobuita, a lot in Yokosuka Harbor).

3. The voice overs are pretty bad, but they have a certain charm to them.

I own the LE of Shenmue 1 and the xsux version of Shenmue 2 and never got farther than an hour into both games. Here's the parts I quit at:

S1: "Have you seen any sailors?"
S2: "Would you like to play a game of lucky hit?"

I never got to actually fight in any of the shenmues. Terrible games.

SC5 is also pretty bad too. Unresponsive simon says shit.

I see what you're saying, but I totally disagree.

The worlds in modern GTA games and other sandbox games may be much bigger than the world of Shenmue, but in their size they lose the amazing detail of Shenmue. One of the main reasons (probably the main reason) why people love Shenmue is the game's atmosphere. Shenmue has a level of detail that no other game has been able to immitate.

Even the $100 million GTA IV doesn't come close.

I have Shenmue II english from Europe.

That meant more before Shenmue II came out on xbox, but it's still the gem of my DC collection.  Unfortunately it's really hard to play cause my bootup disc stopped working.

I never played it much because I always got bored in Shenmue 1 and never beat it.

You know what? I kinda liked Shenmue when it came out. But it was a fucking embarrassment to play in front of anyone.

I was pretty exciteable about games back then and was totally hyped for it. My roommate was a pretty big gamer too, and I got him hyped to hell. Then we started playing it...soon after that he laughed at me and went out. I ended up completing the game, never knowing if Ryo would ever find Lan Di or the Sailors. I had mixed feelings about the game, and strangely wanted to see more. But it didn't really matter. Everyone but the hardcore contingent thought it was rubbish, and honestly the only reason it endeared itself to us was blatant fanservice and unmatched (if unrealized) ambition. It didn't really hold up to repeat playthroughs, and after a while...I stopped caring.

Years later, when the "second chapter" came out on Xbox, I avoided it completely. I eventually grabbed it on impulse in a bargain bin a year or so later, but never got more than an hour or so in. It was too archaic. Too bleh. Too Shenmue.

I actually fired it up last time I hooked up the DC and got maybe 10 minutes in before I switched to Seaman. SEAMAN.

Sorry, but I can't even muster the nostalgia.

i secretly kind of like shenmue -- it's like a weird personal game from a mildly autistic designer that somehow got an immense budget and brought down its publisher. plus i played through it in japanese using the dregs of a semester of college japanese, so it really felt like visiting a bumfuck japanese town nobody would ever visit. still haven't played shenmue II, though i've had the european dc version sitting around for years

I remember being so excited to learn how to fight, because I had followed the game since it had started as a Virtua Fighter RPG.  I got to that part in the game probably 4 times, and rarely played past it.  My add couldn't stay focused on such a mundane game, as much as I wanted to really enjoy the world.

I still remember the series fondly, however.  The opening movie in Shenmue is so epic, and the best looking thing I've seen out of my Saturn.

Same.  I tested it to make sure it worked, but I wasn't going to touch it until I finished the first game.  It was obvious at that point the game wasn't coming out in the US (for DC anyway) and I had stolen so many DC games that I didn't feel bad about buying a little piece of history so to speak.  I never finished the first game so I never started the second.

Its funny.  That game cost a hojillion dollars to make, right?  With current tech, you could make a sequel that would look awesome and play better for less than half the price of the first game.

I'm still holding out hope that one day we'll get a 3rd one.  I don't think its likely, but you never know.  They could be scraping the barrel for ideas one day and decide to go for it.  Maybe by then it'll be a distant memory and nobody will remember if it was good or bad, but just that it was a big deal in its day.

Really liked Shenmue for the time period... not sure how it would hold up today. But I remember being drawn into that game's world like no other game at the time, thought the graphics were amazing, even if lots of the things like "I'm looking for some sailors!" was silly. First game I bought with my Xbox1 was Shenmue 2 but I never played it.

I like when you talk to Goro about the Mad Angels

Goro: Ssh, don't say that name so loud!
Ryo: What do you know about the Mad Angels?
Goro: No maan, you can't say that name around here!!
