TVC is actually one of the few MGS fans here so he wasn't trolling about there being better stuff to play on the PS2.

MGS is one of my favorite series but the games have always been kinda crap in terms of gameplay mechanics.

I think that only MGS3 was really behind in terms of gameplay when it was released.  MGS2 had really impressive gameplay at the time, and I would actually argue that even today many aspects of the game are still impressive.

n64 battle mode was mario kart's one moment of accidental brilliance. will the rest of the series please deposit itself in the shïtbin thank you

Mario Kart 64 battle mode was great because of one reason:  BLOCK FORT.

Whoever made Block Fort should get a medal.

the 'soulfulness' of a mascot kart racing game is at zero or subzero by default -- it's not a relevant criterion. but mk64 battle mode on block fort was the kind of accessible but crunchy arcade multiplayer gaming that nintendo often aims for and misses. again, i'm convinced that this was an accidental success -- all the other maps are awful, and subsequent games have hardly bothered with battle mode

Yeah, MGS2 had pretty impressive gameplay elements. . .too bad the game didn't require you to use them much.  I love the game, and I do think that every entry has interesting gameplay, but they just don't have you using it so much.

I've always believed that MGS's sluggish controls and up-close camera were better suited for indoor environments.  MGS3 was a better game overall than MGS2 but the outdoor environments made the typical MGS flaws even more glaring.

There are plenty of good games on the DS.  The hardware may be garbage, but it's got a decent library.  Both of the active handhelds are worth owning.

At least developers have realized this and have stopped making 3D games for the most part. I will be glad when the days of ugly-as-sin N64/PS1/Saturn 3D graphics are totally behind us.

Mario Kart Wii was a step down from the DS version, which almost made me think the series had redeemed itself.  The new courses range from pitiful to barely passable.  The idea of 24 or so kart racers was a decent idea but instead of bringing back a couple of the Koopa Kids, they went the tard route and decided to go with Baby Luigi and Toadette.  Speaking of going the tard route, they completely fucked up the SNES courses.

The only fun thing about it was owning 12 year old Europeans online.  :gbcry

Sure. The current Slim's screen is already pretty good plus you know it's hackable.  If you want the new model, you're going to have wait a few months for it to be released + however long it takes to be hacked.

As much as I hate on the Wii and NIntendo, I'm one of those who thinks Nintendo didn't go REALLY downhil until the GC era.  Both the N64 and GC have great games at the end of their lives [which I doubt Wii will be so], but GC showed to me that Miyamoto was no longer important, and Nintendo had run out of ideas.

And for teh record, MK64 is my favorite MK series.  It was such a blast at the time. Same with Goldeneye.  Even if in hindsight, it's pretty damn overrated.

And PS2 is my favorite console of all time, obviously.  Now I wish there was a SNES/Genesis two-in-one machine.  Can anyone pick one? THere's just NES+SNES, or NES+Genesis, or something.  ANd I dont give a shit about 8bit outside of select few titles.

Speaking of which, handhelds sucked up until the GBA.

There's some nice stuff for GB actually:
-FFL2
-FFA
-Link's Awakening
-Mole Mania
-Balloon Kid
-Gargoyle's Quest
-Super Mario Land 2

And GBC had the DQ remixes, which were really good, along with the Oracles games.

No, I still think the N64 was the beginning of their downfall.  After Ocarina of Time, Nintendo decided to make a bunch of no effort party games.  I guess you can count Majora's Mask and maybe, just maybe, Paper Mario as exceptions.  Didn't stop them from making several Mario Parties, Mario sports titles, and Pokemon Stadiums.  Nintendo just got lazy is all.  If they can make all these great sales from these half assed efforts, why bother trying?  That was pretty much their Game Cube philosophy.  Miyamoto was not important because you can rake in more money by releasing annual Mario Party titles.

Now Nintendo is even lazier.  They've abandoned even the complexities of the annual Mario themed party games and just went to the minimalist Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Wii Music.  Which makes me think that quality titles we got like Mario Galaxy are the best the Wii is ever going to get.  It is all downhill from here.

Nintendo didn't make those. Those games were either outsourced or made by second parties who focused on those titles.

Well, to be fair, after Ocarina of Time, every third party dev fully jumped ship to PS1. Nintendo had no choice but to make whatever they could as fast as they could (and as Crushed mentioned, the parties and shit were outsourced).

Though you are still somewhat correct since Nintendo's strategy after Ocarina was to make games cheaper, with smaller teams and churn them out much faster, since games like Ocarina took so much of Nintendo's resources.

Twilight Princess is not a good game.  Wind Waker may have been front-loaded, with all of the good content in the first half, but being back-loaded, like TP, just sucks.  TP is just a poorly designed game.  It's tied with OoT as the worst Zelda game.

TP just barely edges out OoT for me because of superior art and sound.

Other than that, yes, TP is pretty much tied with OoT for worst 3D Zelda. (Phantom Hourglass is the worst Zelda, both 2D and overall)

Yeah but that almost sounds worse.  Nintendo decided to give up and let HAL Laboratories or Hudson Soft do their games instead.  There was the Super Mario 64-2, which was announced since probably before the original's release, you had Earthbound 64 that never saw the light of day, etc.  Nintendo after Ocarina of Time axed any games that required any developer ambition.  This vision has continued to stick with Nintendo until Twilight Princess and even then, other than Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo has continued their vision of laziness.

At the end of the day, corporations just care about profit and Nintendo is raking it in.  Doesn't mean that I have to simply accept half baked software and software with stunted potential.  Not when there are three other platforms that are delivering in spades, well, two more than the other one.

GameStop #6232

EDIT: And heres a little story about the Gamestop today form when I went:

A women comes in with her son and daughter and goes up to one of the Gamestop workers and was like "Can I ask a question?" He was like "Sure go ahead." She says "I was recently in Thailand and I bought one of these thigns for my son, the guy over there asked my son 20 games he wanted and put them on this little thing for him" and her son pulls out a M3 Real.  :lol She starts to ask the guy were she can get pirated games on the internet and he just said "Did you try google?" while trying to get her out of his store (she wanted him to FILL the cart up with games). I was secretly laughing, but then realized how much of a fucking nerd I am for knowing exactly what she wanted.

I remember that around this time last year, Wii systems could be found on the shelves.  So I could believe a few used Wiis are out there.  Don't expect it to be around for long.

On an upside, I sold two of my games.  Up to $295 now.  For a dirty poor like me, that $295  :hyper

i think it has another year before the real downturn begins, because you were actually right, it is a fad on a lot of levels

nintendo has been smart enough to keep the flow of expensive near-useless nongame peripherals going, though, so i may be off the mark there

Nostalgia aside, the PS2 is probably the best system to have ever been released.  The variety and volume of games, with dozens of classics, I don't know of a better system.  At least not without rose colored tinted glasses of youth who will probably say NES, SNES, or Genesis.

Oh for 95% of gamers I'd agree.  But I'm everythig kev and drohne despise about xbots.

I basically don't care for anything from Japan, fighting games, action platformers, or button mashers.  I'll play kiddie games when I have a kid and if I am at a party, I don't want to play a damn videogame.  I am a lapsed PC gamer who wanted shooters on a console.  I bought a HDTV and updated my AVR/speaker setup for XBOX's superior home theater capabilities.  I admit to being shallow.

i'm plenty shallow! i dislike xbots because they're friggen annoying! you're not going to tell me you didn't see benbird's "hey, too human is fun" avatar and didn't want to smash him in the face. or his other avatars. or his phrasing. actually if you've seen one of his posts i'm sure you identify.

i don't hate xbots any more than i hate any other fanbots; i still find salestards the most annoying, then ntards, extreme xbots, then the sony fans that attack me for disliking major sony franchise iterations like ratchet, then regular xbots and sonytards.

i still do like 90% of my gaming on a 360!

360 woot! go 360! chugga chugga

I did most of my gaming on PS2 last gen but always multiplatform gaming on the Xbox. My collections were about equal until 2005 when I started snatching up cheap PS2 games (and I continue to snatch them up...I just bought Extermination for 2.80 yesterday). Now I have a ton of PS2 games and I haven't really bought much on Xbox (but I still buy them when I see 'em cheap, got Indigo Prophecy and Megaman Anniversary this summer). I only have a few GC games.

I enjoyed music games the most last gen, and the Xbox had a grand total of 7, so I had to go with the PS2.

The xbox music games:
Xbox Music Mixer (Terrible. Lips will be just as bad)
Karaoke Revolution (Amazing, but on PS2)
Karaoke Revolution Party (Better on PS2)
In the Groove (lol)
DDR Ultramix
DDR Ultramix 2 (both terrible)
MTV Music Generator 2 (better on PS2)
