Doug Erickson

lies, he's made some awesome games, like dungeon.net and coolsnakes.net

On the other hand, he also created such monstrosities as this:

Quote
Why was that? Because most of us gamers knew in our heart of hearts that this game was going to be something special. Shigeru Miyamoto, the game's often-lauded mastermind, frequently referred to the then-underway Zelda project as potentially his greatest videogame accomplishment yet. On top of that, the Zelda series of titles from Nintendo have rarely disappointed (although opinions on 2 are as various as the colors on N64 controllers, and I'm probably the only person alive who didn't think A Link To The Past was all that scorching), and the Zelda N64 release figured hugely in Nintendo's plans for re-emergence in the Japanese marketplace. It's often considered to be a sort of elevated countercultural hipness to denigrate that which will inevitably be popular.

Yeah, Dyack gets compared to ol' "Dr." Derek Smart a lot, (even Malka saying that Dyack surpassed him) but it's really not even close.

Dyack at least worked on several high-profile and well-received games before Too Human; Derek Smart was some dude with a fake doctorate who was claiming his first game would revolutionize PC gaming.
Too Human is mediocre; Battlecruiser 3000AD was literally unplayable.
Dyack popped up once every three weeks or so on GAF to post something stupid or maybe trade a few arguments with a detractor before leaving; Derek Smart spent hours upon hours on IRC every day getting into long flamewars.
Dyack got butthurt by a message board; Derek Smart attacked a Coke machine in his publisher's lobby.

But of course, it's almost hard to classify Derek Smart as an actual part of "the gaming industry" seeing how he was such an abject failure.

Dyack. Come on.

Check yourself before you hate on Miyamoto. He might be a crazy asshole at this point, but he also basically invented the modern videogame. Dude is a living legend and deserves your respect. Even if he keeps up the crazy manchild act till the day he keels over from a soiled panty overdose.

For once I agree with you. The guy has talent for sure, but his last few games...meh.

Twisted Metal has always been overrated, Calling All Cars was boring and repetitive, his only big hit is God Of War.

you shouldn't be judging a tool on the community though, just on their performance and output. Miyamoto and Kojima have set gaming back decades.

Kojima doesn't strike me as being a cock, just that Konami is PR-spinning their one auteur into something bigger than he is; nothing new about the cult of celebrity.

Jaffe is one of my pet peeves ever since the first GoW blog entry where he seemed utterly banal, and has never proven otherwise either in interviews or his own blog. Every other word is an expletive; the man's vocabulary is limited. But a game designer's work is inherently tied to communication, both in showing the player how to use the game, and way, way prior to that in explaining the foundations of those ideas to the rest of the dev team.

I don't see what's wrong with Miyamoto so much as Nintendo has not allowed any of his proteges (or even non-Miyamoto influenced designers) to share in the spotlight. I guess they can't be utterly assured that anyone else will stay the course with the company as faithfully as Shiggy has?

Who is the biggest tool? Who the hell was the PR flack for EA when EA Spouse broke wide? Rusty something... (googles) Rueff. That guy, defending EA's unpaid overtime policy when the company eventually paid out, that's sad for an HR guy. I remember when HR would actually go to bat for the workers instead of finding ways to shiv them.

You forgot:

Dyack spent 10 years making Too Human and in the end, nobody cared. Derek Smart has spent 12 years releasing patches and updates of a game people stopped caring about at least 14 years ago.

That's patently untrue. Aonuma has been getting interviews since the days of Majora's Mask, and he's damn well known as the current go to Zelda guy by everyone in gaming. The Mario Galaxy director has been bombarded with adulation and acknowledgement ever since that game was finished. 9/10 times you probably don't hear too much from most of the other designers at Nintendo is because many of them don't seem to want to do interview (at least that was the case with the likes of Takashi Tezuka anyway). So basically, I doubt it's cause the Nintendo higher ups worry about taking the spotlight away from Miyamoto.

Derek Smart still releases games, he recently started up some new episodic content, said that if you played his game and didn't like it, he'd personally refund the money.

His forums are so funny.  Some guy was talking about how this new game had strange graphic effects and looked ugly, and Smart came off and called him a "fool", saying that it was intentional and gave a bunch of techno-babble about why that was.

As much shit as Smart gets, you gotta admire the guy.  His games are extremely deep and have a ton of potential, and he's more or less doing everything on his own.  If he had a competent team behind him, he could probably make one of the greatest games, but his ego won't let anyone else share in his glory.  The worst part is the damn techno-jargon that he throws around in his games.  The manual is the size of a phonebook, but the game is impossible to play unless you read and memorize everything.  Hundreds of acronyms, technical terms, buttons on a spacecraft, etc.  The learning curve is absurd.

Kojima - So much harm done to the industry, so many cocksuckers at his feet, so little clue to his own media
Dyack - Disciple of Kojima, turned dumber the moment he got closer to Kojima, no self awareness or control
Jason Rubin - Career based on copying and pasting others. The distinguished mentally-challenged edginess of his platformers.

PR not included because it's basically their job to be tools.
