Found an interesting design error in the PSP

I've got the Slim & Lite model, which can charge via (mini) USB connection.

Unfortunately you have to be able to turn it ON and then put it in USB Mode for it to accept a charge from the USB cable. So my PSP was utterly drained this morning, and I tried to charge it with the waiting-and-ready USB cable attached to my work PC - NO CHANCE!

I ended up borrowing an adapter from QA long enough to "prime the pump" and then switch to USB charging once I had just enough juice to turn it on. Still, it was pretty surprising to see this oversight.

If you're running one of the Fun Firmwares you can hold down R Trigger on a fresh boot and activate "charge when USB connected." Problem solved!

Fools!

Just carry 4 spare batteries like Sho Nuff and the problem solves itself.

the point is that if the battery is dead, it won't charge at all though. Right?

You need some power for it to work, which seems an oversight.

Oh yeah -- in that case you're boned. Maybe in the PSP-3000 :/

Dammit, when is that crazy adapter that lets you combo two 8GB MicroSD's gonna come out?

Ah there we go -- it comes out on Saturday the 30th. I am thinking of avoiding the Akiba rush (unless you're planning on going Saturday) and just mail-ordering a few of them from Rakuten. Anyone interested?

I ran into a similar type of problem with the 360 pad.  At the moment, I'm only using a single 360 pad (I generally only play multiplayer between multiple systems, so I haven't really needed it).  I have a wireless adaptor for my PC, however, so I often switch between the two.  Well, this causes two problems...

The 360 itself loses track of how much charge is left in the battery and always reports the incorrect amount.  More importantly, however, if the controller is drained it becomes more difficult to sync up with a different device.  For instance, I wanted to use my 360 yesterday but the pad was in sync with the PC.  Unfortunately, it would only power up for 2-3 seconds before dying.  That wasn't long enough to hit the "sync" button on the top.  When I plug it in with the charge cable, however, that button is hidden so it automatically syncs with the PC.  I kept trying to hit the button and quickly plug it in, but that wasn't working.  I ended up letting it charge for 10 minutes or so and then switching over to the 360.

If I still had the original battery cover I guess I could have used AA batteries to do it, but I have no clue where that went.

dark, what do you do if you were using the controller on 360, and then wanna use it on PC? Is there a way to power it on without also powering on the 360?
