Do they sell these in brick and mortar stores at all?  Now that I know it's safe to buy, I want one right now.

only on amazon so far.  I've got a loaner from work and it is a great device for avid readers.  The case sucks, though.  You'll need a third party one.

I didn't really expect it.  I am excited for a more stylish looking Kindle with a cover screen in the future, but maybe if they start putting on the pressure, Sony would release an even more superior one at a cheaper price.

They're like 350 now.  I wish they were 50 bucks cheaper, but considering it comes with free wireless internet 4eva, I think the price is mostly justified.  I wish they would have ironed out the physical usability issues--they could do that without any changes to the actual guts--but at this point, I ain't waiting.

I don't get why the free wireless Internet is a selling point, though?  Home and office are equipped with Wi-Fi and I've already got a bunch of Wi-Fi enabled devices.

It's still too costly.  The electronic books are also too costly.  I bought The Road and Yiddish Policemen's Union at Borders for like $20, which is roughly the same price of buying them electronically.  That seems ridiculous to me.  I understand you're paying for the convenience to have them at the touch of your fingertip and not taking up valuable space, but the prices are ridiculous.

Amazon should adopt an Apple model and start rolling out two or three different SKUs for different users with varying price points.  And significantly reduce the cost of books.  If people can purchase several television episodes and entire albums for roughly the same cost of a book online, which are geniunely regarded as negative by today's stupid youth, it will never catch on.

This is true, but if you break your Kindle - you have to spend another $350 to read all your books.  Both scenarios are not that likely (who loses a book?).

$199 Kindle with novels that range from $2.99 to $4.99 depending on the market is my personal sweet spot.  I'd be willing to pay a premium if it came with extra downloadable content (I could imagine paying $7.99 for essays or what have you).  I also wouldn't mind if say, an electronic novel was $9.99 while the hardback was out, but decreased to $4.99 when the mass market paperback started to hit the stores.

I don't mind that the content isn't that much cheaper.  Physical copies don't mean shit to me.  My place is filled with books.  The big draw of wireless internet is being able to shop from the Kindle store anywhere.  As you said, it would be nice if there were a SKU without it (there is talk that there will be multiple SKUs, btw), but for the launch model, I think it's pretty impressive.

Are e-books supposed to cost 2 bucks a pop?  That's not going to happen.  Let go of your fetish for physical copies.  Digital only is a good thing.

How do you lose a book?!

I have more books than I do DVDs.  Things get lost in the shuffle.  Not a lot, but it happens.

Also, don't forget that the first 2 gens of the iPods were a bit rough in the price-to-value ratio, as well.  Like I said, I wanted to wait for the second rev, but knowing it's not going to happen this year will likely have me pull the trigger now.

I didn't say two bucks a pop!  I think I offered a very reasonable and profitable business model for eBooks ($9.99 when hardback hits or first couple of months of publication, then drop off to $4.99 when mass market paperback hits).

How do I have a fetish for physical copies?
