Exactly. Team Obama walked right into this. They overplayed their hand this weekend.

They overplayed their hand by... congratulating her on her being picked and saying that the media should leave her family out of it?  ???

I think Team Media overplayed their hand a LITTLE. Its a shame The Media has to do the vetting for mccain. While they went too far with the family crap, all of the administrative bullshit they've dug up is fair, and something that should have been dealt with during the vetting process MCCAIN.

I could stand a podium and read whatever they give me. That suddenly makes me a maverick?

Not just a Maverick. A Maverick Game-Changer. It helps to be racist, corrupt, inept, and laughing at the idea of a normal person affecting the political process like Democrats seem to believe.

Obama's campaign has been extraordinarily disciplined regarding this pick and the surrounding contraversy. I'd argue that they have done FAR more to try to take Palin's family off the table as a political/media item than the McCain campaign, who has been trying to use her family matters a smokescreen to cover for the incredible amount of Real Shit coming out as people dig up her past.

If anyone has overplayed their hand, it's Palin, whose speech last night was bitter and aggressive, and likely gave a negative overall first impression to voters when she should have been tacking a much more warm, friendly, hopeful tone.

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

That is not discipline.

When it came to the family shit, that was coming straight from the McCain camp-from the annoucement Monday that Bristol was teen preggers, to the remarks yesterday that people were demanding paternity tests from Trig (something I NEVER saw even in the most absurd of dailykos posts).

The media is giving Palin more leeway than they should.

I was at the gym this morning and there was a roundtable discussion with a bunch of women sitting on white, expensive couches (Today?  I don't know what show it was) and they all seemed pretty excited about Palin.  None of them really discussed issues that cut deep, it was all about her personality and barely scratching the surface of the issues.  The fact that they talked about nothing and praised her pissed me off so much I had one of the best workouts I ever had.

I would normally be pissed but I highly recommend the book Nixonland.  The election of 2008 resembles a lot like 1968.  A lot of this is pure Southern Strategy.  People have fallen for the same BS for 40 years now and will continue to for some time.

Quite right. To be honest, I'm surprised even that much was said. Obama's campaign -- which *is* incredibly disciplined, as Frag said -- is probably going to avoid referencing Palin as much as possible. But I don't think it matters: since when have VP picks mattered in American politics? They haven't; they still don't. That's a reality that McCain hopes to change in gambling on Palin, a double-or-nothing choice.

sd's dutifully repeating the talking point of poor old Palin getting ganged up on.

They're using the pregnant daughter and the internet rumors about Trig's birth to get all the many, many valid complaints and questions about Palin treated like they're in the same tabloid category.

By what standards has Obama's campaign overshot on Palin?  They've avoided any sexist or regionally biased attacks, said outright that her kids are off limits, made no judgments about her family decisions and been very measured in the tone of their critiques.

I saw Obama comparing the size of Wasilla to that of his own presidential campaign and he was all "we've proved we can manage large systems" without being dismissive or sarcastic at all.

If you're going to be upset at this sort of stuff you should stay away from politics.  This is as nice as it gets.

Regarding the debate on energy policy and drilling vs. not drilling, is anyone advocating the position of simply banning speculation in the oil market, making it so that oil cannot be traded in futures?

You can't outright ban it, but you can put some regulatory controls in place such that speculators can't completely manipulate the market to the point where the price of commodities is completely artificial and disconnected from any reasonable supply/demand scenario.

This. If I was running the Obama campaign I'd be starting up the whisper smear machine and the 527 robocalls/push polls regarding her maternal failures right now. The Obama campaign has been respectful of keeping away from the lurid stuff and keeping on the substantive message.

Its undisciplined in two ways:

1) It was a tonedeaf attack on small town America given Obama's previous "clinging" comments
2) It opened the experience door (notice how it didin't mention she's now a governor)

All they had to do was say something about it being an historic pick for the GOP and congratulate her on the nomination. Instead, they tried to be cute.

Unfair subjects of discussion for Democrats vis Sarah Palin:

1) Her daughter's pregnancy.
2) Her own decision to take on this job after giving birth to a Down's Syndrome baby
3) Firing the local librarian for not banning books
4) The federal earmark money she got as mayor
5) Firing the public safety commissioner for not axing her brother-in-law
6) The federal earmark money she got as governor
7) Firing the Agriculture and Conservation Board for not preserving an unprofitable state-owned dairy farm
8) Her crazy ass preacher who thinks that God smites Jews for not recognizing Christ
9) Anything at all about what she has or hasn't done ever
10) Anything at all about where she stands on any issues.

Fair subjects of discussion for Democrats vis Palin:

1) How totally awesome she is
2) How this is like so historic
3) How her nomination proves that the Democratic party are the real sexists
4) How being near the Bering Straits gives her more foreign policy experience than George Kennan

I like this new rule where one campaign isn't allowed to do anything but compliment the other.  It'll make for an exciting, unpredictable new way of practicing electoral politics!

but but but but liberals always play so fair and nice and wring their hands and self-doubt and oh oh oh oh, why can't they keep doing it

remember when they admitted kerry wasn't that good a pick, but we all rallied around bush? good times, good times

now they're just not acting the way they're supposed to, must be obama's messiah complex, why can't they just be bullied like they used to wah wah tears

at least palin makes them mad and that's funny so i'll vote for her (mccain who) even if she's the snake-handling, lying, hypocritical meth queen of alaska

Yeah.  Basically it's nostalgia for an era of simple Norman Rockwell values that never really existed in the first place.

I don't think the sentiment is strong enough to make everyone in the burbs suddenly rally to Palin's banner.

Shouldn't you be playing the "I was drunk" card on your declaration of undying love for Palin, sd?

It's hard to imagine someone being sober and not embarrassed for having written that.

MSNBC is saying McCain is doing "town hall"-like speech tonight. No podium. He'll walk around holding the microphone. They've changed the stage around - like a giant T. He's been rehearsing the speech for six weeks now.

Different to say the least...

"She should have Henry Kissinger baby sitting her."

And of course just yesterday you were disgusted with her actual record and "accomplishments".  But now that she's proven the remarkable feat is possible, that a Republican Governor can rile up a room full of Republicans, apparently your brain has been checked at the door.  Or maybe you're just thinking with that other head...

siamesedreamer, explain this!

The media is absolutely evicerating her. She's not "their type" of woman, so they're throwing everything they can at the wall to see what sticks. Its utterly ridiculous. Wait for the new National Enquirer story to hit.

That said, McCain walked right into this. He shouldn't have picked her with such a weak vetting.

Yo words!  Don't try wankering out on the facts now.
