Ben Stein's reaction there echoes the kind of reaction I would expect to see from most paleoconservatives. The GOP, having fully purged its libertarian wing, has placed the small-government paleocons are next on the chopping block and Ben Stein sorta gets that.

People like like Huckabee, Palin, and Bush-big government conservatives with strong social conservative positions-are the near future of the GOP.

I just, I can't see how what happened with SD happened.  He went from being someone on the right that I could at least pay attention to to someone that fell apart and turned into an erection-popping, teenage Hannity.  It seemed like he was just parodying the wackos that share a party with him.

I really wish there were more reasonable conservatives here and on GAF.  Unfortunately, the better qualities of even intelligent republicans get thrown to the wayside when their backs are against wall in an election.  I'd like to think if/when we have a liberal equivalent of McCain/Palin (and Bush/Cheney) that I'd be able to see the mess for what it really is.

Well, they went from a week ago knowing their brand was about as popular as chinese dog food to thinking "hey maybe we got a shot at this with this fresh faced new politician" to "OMFG NO!  THE LIBRUL ELITE EASTERN MEDIA SCUMFUCKERS ARE TRYING TO TAKE AWAY OUR NEW TOY!  GRRR!"

Honestly tho, people responsible for the last 8 years aren't going to be rational anyhow.

LOLz...y'all are funny.  :lol

2004:  siamesedreamer votes Bush for president

2005-2007: siamesedreamer angrily vents about how he shouldn't have voted Bush for president, that he's run the country into the ground, and repeatedly claims it was a mistake to do so.

2008: siamesedreamer, like the vacuous battered wife that he is, comes back for more.  "This time, things will be different"

You think this is the near future? I think it's been the past and present! Big government/big spending with social conservative positions describes Reagan to a T even though people's beliefs about him don't.

The libertarian wing has been dead for at least 20 years.

I think she spoke over a lot of the political dirt dug up by the media in recent days.  She's really being championed by a lot of pundits too.  It wouldn't surprise me if the substantial information about her reign as Mayor and Governor fall on deaf ears.

Fucking please.  Supposedly conservative republicans don't understand conservative philosophy, or please try and explain how Mayor McMooseburger's party crafted image as a "reformer" and fiscal conservative doesn't jive with her record as a mayor that hired a lobbyist to get pork funneled to her small town and left office with a debt for her constituency that averaged $3000.  Or how she walked into a surplus as Governor and has magically turned it into a deficit, kind of like another salt of the earth Republican Governor I can think of...

Don't try and paint ME as the unrealistic one.  Sure, I hate Republicans.  I fundamentally disagree with their stances on almost ALL issues.  But I understand them, which is more than I can say for most Republicans.  So put that in your pipe and smoke it, asshole.

Apology for what?  I'm totally confused.

All I said is that despite Triumph lampooning the whole ordeal, the speech did go over pretty big.  Not just with the convention, but with the press.  I'm looking at CNN's Report Card on the speech and it's all A's and one B (Damn you, Begalis!).  Chuck Todd called her the conservatives' Obama.  Even Matthews had good words.  Fox News was already using her to proselytize for days.

I thought considering all the dirt dug up on her, including the stuff of real substance (like her wacky sermons, federal earmarks, facist leanings, abuse of political power, etc.), that McCain was in for a long, embarassing ride.

But she came out in one night and managed to shout over all of that, and really strike a chord, for better or worse.

The last part depends on your party affiliation.

They think she's "formidable" but nothing in her speech was anything of substance.  The Democratic talking point is that she never spoke about middle class families or health care or things that are important - she just slung mud.

edit:

Republicans on the attack and ignoring the issues of health care, education, poverty etc.

Palin will be treated like any other political opponent woman or not. On the issue of sexism, Obama said that if she entered the race as VP of John McCain, she should be expected to be treated like any other guy.

In the end, I think it is going to be difficult for most of us to understand why so many people will vote McCain.  Although I know that soccer moms will vote for Palin.  If The View and the Today Show give her the thumbs up, which I think they have, McCain secured several million votes right then and there.  Soccer moms know their own.

I said at the beginning that this was a good choice by McCain to get elected and unfortunately, I have not been proven wrong.  The funny thing is that Obama is called the celebrity politician, but Palin will be plastered all over tabloids and those crappy magazines in front of checkout aisles.

From Obsidian Wings, posted before Palin's speech:

Quote from: publius
Plus, the expectations are so low tonight that she’ll almost certainly meet them. Following her speech, the press will probably offer gushing praise — in part because of low expectations, in part as penance for its (appropriately) critical coverage.

I think he pretty much nailed it.  The press always feels a need to balance coverage of major party candidates and Palin was taking such a beating that she was able to surprise people by being a competent public speaker with a teleprompter.

Is nobody bothered by the fact that the Republicans have rallied around the vice president nominee to go toe-to-toe against Obama in terms of mainstream appeal and oratory skills?

The way the media is talking today, you almost get the idea that Palin is running for President, not McCain.  I guess Republicans really weren't happy with him.  They love Palin.

Are we voting Palin for President or John McCain?  I can't tell.

Orrin Hatch was just on MSNBC responding to today's Obama's comments of (and I'm paraphrasing) "Can anyone name four McCain policies that will help your wallet?"  He said that this is deflecting the attention away from McCain's superior energy policies - like solar and geothermal.

What the fuck, is this the same John McCain we're talking about?  And how is an environmentally friendly energy policy superior to Obama - who was talking about such a policy months before McCain ever thought of it.

As to the outcome, imo it's not anywhere as close as you want to think.  But if, for whatever reason, McCain does win, I am done with Americans.  How fucking dumb can you get?  I will learn French and go to a trade school for whatever is in demand in Canadia, where I will gladly eat poutine and pretend to like hockey.  Because voting for these idiots after the past 8 years is really fucking inexcusable.  They're intellectually bankrupt.

Meh... I agree with certain things from both sides, and I am generally of the opinion that not much would get done regardless of who wins, so either way.

Such is life for a socially conservative, fiscally moderate dude who isn't going to vote anyway so who the frap cares. Electoral college, yo. My vote doesn't count. And even if it did, it doesn't count that much.

That said, Obama is certainly the more likable candidate and the one that at least manages to deliver an uplifting message. I think four years of democratic rule might be good to get certain things in motion, and then play it by ear. It could be time to bring the republicans back at that point. Like I said, I agree with things from both sides, and disagree with things from both sides. Can't have either one in power for too long.

I don't think that it would be the end of the world if McCain were to be elected, but I think it would be the end of many 401k's. There is no way the U.S. can sustain the war.

You are right though FA, it would sting alot considering how good of a candidate Obama is and how shitty Kerry was. I personally think that alot of people know that something isn't right and the Obama catalyst rings true for alot of people, regardless of political affiliation.

Tommorow should have unemployment at a five year low, and the stock market is convulsing badly.

But is it really that bad? You just might not get it.

If McCain and Palin win I will stay, but become a bit more involved with the issues I care about at the state level through resource donation and whatnot only (I AM lazy after all). Washington State is almost its own little place most of the time anyway.

It's probably something else. Accountants right out of college are some of the most sought after well paid graduates at the moment.

In my first class at Western we had to do introductions. I was surprised to see 4-5 other guys that are enrolled in a graduate program because they could not find jobs after graduating.

No, it had to do with numbers.  He was working as an accountant for a local company and was laid off several months ago, and having trouble finding work.

Ive never understood the Republicans Lower Taxes but Lots of War. War costs money. We cant just not ask for money from the people for a war without some sector of our infrastructre falling apart.

Were the last 4 years really that bad?

Well, other than

A) Finding out we were lied to in order to start a war
B) Having the economy go into the shitter ($4 gas, housing crisis, banks failing lolz)
C) Not addressing the global climate crisis (which is real, despite what you might think)
D) Watching the govt. sit on it's hands as a major American city drowned
E) Doing fuck all towards developing a policy on alternative energy sources so we don't fund those turrirsts we're fighting
F) Having the Justice dept. be politicized ("what makes you excited to serve George W. Bush")
G) Torturing people
H) Denying the people we torture the right of Habeas Corpus
I) Having lobbyists and members of Congress go to jail for corruption

it's been just peachy fucking keen.  I'm sure I missed a couple, you guys feel free to add to the list.

There comes a point where those risk free treasury bills, which are financing the war right now, become pretty risky.

Here's my big grievances with the Republican talking points:

1. The Big Government lie.  Where is this conservative, limited government they're talking about?  Why would Obama conflict with their utopian society of small government?  The Bush Administration saw government expand!  It's huge!

2. Energy policies.  What energy policy do they really endorse?  Clean energy or drilling?  Drilling has no immediate impact.  Does repeating that it DOES have immediate impact over and over simply make it so.  It's a flat out lie.  Why are people buying that?  And what is the blueprint for clean energy?  Is there one?  Hydrogen fuel cells are decades away from functional use, why are not subsidizing electric cars, wind power, solar power, etc.?

3. Taxes. Obama will raise your taxes!  If you're rich!  I never get this.  People have it in their head, that Republicans lower taxes and Democrats raise taxes.  If anything Democrats raise taxes for people who make more and Republicans lower taxes for people who make more.  The people who make less never get shit.

1.5 years of being unemployed? And somehow it's the presidents fault? I see 15 accountant jobs listed in my city's newspaper website just for today alone.
