The leak spiked my interest, as i didn't even knew the game was coming out so soon, i mean, the game has been talked about all these years and then when the launch is near it's like nothing is happening, so weird.

Anyway, i watched some IGN videos, and wtf, this is like a rts, i thought this was about creating shit and letting it "live", play god.

why is it so hard for you to grasp that these games where you create something also involve PLAYING them like any other game?  when you add the ability to create, you aren't taking anything away that somehow makes them lesser than other games. 

personally i'll probably just dick around in spore a bit like i do in other maxis games, but for others, they'll spend tons of time.  LBP is different though -- i expect to spend tons of time creating and playing levels.

Update: We’ve just been told that other major German PC mag, Gamestar, has scored the game at 79 percent.

Uh oh. Leading German mag PC Games has reviewed Spore at 73 percent, VG247 has learnt today.

Apparently the review can be summed up thus:

For:

* The Creature Creator
* Great animation
* Endless Content through downloads
* Tons of community features

Against:

* No real depth until the fifth stage
* Uneasy mix of simulation and strategy
* It’s easier to wage war then to be diplomatic
* No “one more go” aspect

We’ve also been told this morning by German and Scandinavian sources that online European reviews are strictly embargoed until the game launches on Friday.

EA was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

The German score comes after UK’s PC Gamer gave the game 91 percent in a cover review.

I don't really see the review as negative. Anyone that expected this game to be a strategic masterpiece isn't thinking to clearly. The "game" aspect of it was never really the focus until late in development.

The issue is that Will Wright has a record of making neat-sounding high concept games become entirely unentertaining to play.  And all of his unentertaining games got cream dream reviews, too.

No.  I have seen a ton of videos and the game has always looked a bit bland.  Doesn't seem like a horrible game, but nothing special either.

Spore looks interesting, but the main part I want to buy it for the planetary stage where you can fly around in a space ship and explore the universe.  If I made a game, it would be that, except more hard sci-fi with gravity and atmosphere playing a huge role.

Spore's more of an ultimate sandbox type game than a pure-blood RTS. Not really for people looking for a game with a solid focus and everything prebuilt. On the other hand, it should be great for people that spent hours fiddling with character creation options or moving around windows in Sims 2.

i missed that one. 

correction: two of those games are in an entirely different genre (i'm including civ in a broad "strategy genre"). 

the point is that spore is an evolution sim/god game with elements of other genres thrown in.  spore was never billed as a pure strategy game.  making comparisons to RTS is absolutely distinguished mentally-challenged.

I'm still intrigued in Spore, and here's why.

I played SimCity, and I fucking loved it
I played SimCity 2000, and I fucking loved it even more
I played SimCity 3000 and 4, and they were great (not as good as 2000 but we won't get into that)
I played the original Sims with most of the expansion packs and they were fun games (although not that fun in the long run)

So, by doing the math, and realizing that I fucking love Will Wright ideas, I'm going to probably pick up Spore, because I will most likely enjoy it. But not right away.

The thing with Maxis games is that you play the fuck out of them for two weeks and then you pick them up later on whenever you get bored and interested in playing them again. I probably won't buy Spore right off the bat, but I will be buying it, rest assured.

I'm pretty convinced that this game is all about editing crap and not about actually doing anything, and that few of the decisions in the game are at all meaningful becuase there's little point to the game anyway outside of editing crap.

the decisions you make have an effect later in the game, though it's somewhat limited.  lean more toward one of the three paths and you'll get specific bonuses in the next stage.  as an example - because i was aggressive in the tribal stage, i got a nuke bonus in the civilization stage that made it even easier to capture cities. 

short descriptions of stages:

cell: plays like flOw
creature: controls like an MMO - hunt or make friends
tribal: controls similar to a conventional RTS (base building) - conquor the continent by force or friendship
civilization: controls similar to an RTS again, but more like world in conflict: more about controlling territory than base building - conquor planet by force or friendship
space: most unique form of gameplay out of the stages.  make contact with other races.  expand your empire to new planets.  terraform planets (change atmosphere, bring in plants/animals from other planets, change landscape etc).  build an encyclopedia of plants/animals by scanning them.  i've just recently gotten to the space stage so i haven't done too much combat yet, but so far combat has taken place on planets only -- bring your spaceship down and shoot at their cities etc.

I've only really spent a day with it but I think I actually liked The Sims more than Spore.  I literally fell asleep during the creature portion yesterday.

I just don't get the appeal here.

Bought the game today. Been a while since I bought a new PC game.

Just got to the space age. Creature fase is ok, coolest thing I did was befriend one of those big creatures that was really strong and had 250 HP. I enlisted in my gang and with him it was pretty easy to kill off the other dudes and get to the tribal stage. Civ stage is nice, but once you have flight, it's a cake. Cool to watch your planes wreak havoc on the city though. I've only seriously created one thing, a house. I call it Space Cake.
I usually just take a creation from someone else, like my space ship is the planet express (futurama).
