My first experience with Hong Kong pirated DVDs
« on: September 04, 2008, 09:11:21 AM »
I got all 3 seasons of Weeds and all seasons of Six Feet Under.

Each costed me 5$ But I was expecting burnt DVDs with magic marker in a shitty case. Man was I wrong. They're all factory DVDs (not purple) in some pretty amazing custom made cases. The Weeds one is all cardboard, and swings open, the door is held closed by a magnet.

The Six Feet Under box is like a foot long and has a sleeve. All in all, the packing was pretty damn good.

Next time my brother in law comes home, I'm going to ask for Curb Your Enthusiasm.

A friend of mine bought the entire series of The X-Files, and it came in a custom briefcase-case.  The video quality was kinda shite, but the quality of the package was so good she was initially convinced she had a legimitate product.

I saw Confession of Pain (HK flick) on a pirated disc that I didn't even know was a copy till the day after when I examined the box at the rental place more closely.  The image quality was fan-fucking-tastic!  Tony Leung never looked better, which is a considerable achievement.

My gf got burned with 2 X-Files box sets after she got into the series last year. She'd never used ebay before, and bootlegs never crossed her mind.

All in all, they would have been fine, but in both sets at least one disk wouldn't play in any of her machines.

I used to buy a shitton of HK-pirated anime DVDs a few years back, and they were literally straight rip-offs of Geneon/ADV releases. Same subtitles and everything, but with slightly off video quality and more episodes/disc.

Even if they don't work, I paid 5$ for each.

Oh yeah, I'm not suggesting it was a bad deal, merely relating my gf's story. In her case, I think she spent around $20 on each, and the listings looked totally legit to her.

I think my boxset of the big o is a bootleg

the video is good but the colors on the box itself look washed out a bit and fakish to me

it was cheap though

I bought Batman Begins and it was missing like 40 minutes of the movie.

I watched the Dark Knight in a movie theater, and I'm pretty sure it was missing forty minutes as well.

I have Band of Brothers from some asian country. Dunno what it is. Cardboard case but it's pretty professional looking. I've just never been able to find it online. It's all gold and shit too.
