The Beatles - Love
« on: November 22, 2006, 01:36:00 PM »
Anyone else heard this album yet? I'm listening to it right now and it's nothing special. Maybe that's because I'm not a Beatles expert like Malek, who probably knows every note in every Beatles song. Many of the songs don't sound mashed up or "new" at all, and some of the ones that do are rather meh.

Although the album makes Octopus's Garder far more bearable than the orginal version.

I really like the way Martin mixed Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite!, I Want You (She's So Heavy), and Helter Skelter. It fits together perfectly.

No one can deny that the Beatles had some absolutely brilliant songs.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds? Eleanor Rigby? A Day in the Life?

I like to rock city blocks, cigarillo. The only shit I can stomach from that era is the Stones, The Doors, and (slightly later) motherfuckin' Gabriel-era Genesis and King Crimson.

I'm not a big fan of the Stones or the Doors.

I think I only really enjoy the The Who from the 60s, and even then, I really only listen to their stuff from the 70s.

Drinky likes early Metallica, which saves him a bit.

Beatles music definitely isn't the "I'm gonna cut myself sort"... its more the "I'm gonna listen to this to relax" or "I'm gonna toke the fuck up to this" kinda music.

YES

The younger generation has embraced Zeppelin, the Beatles, Floyd, etc. But bands like the Doors, The Who, and even Hendrix don't seem nearly as popular today.

I'd go so far as to include Hendrix.

And it's interesting that today most people pay little attention to Axis Bold as Love

what

Are you kidding me? My 16-year old sister listens to the fucking Doors. My cousins all listened to The Doors. Most of my friends listen to Hendrix, my sister's friend just lent her a Hendrix CD.

These acts have a bigger audience with the kids today than they have any right to.

Beatles rule.  No other band has made so many varied songs that are consistently good.

Maybe it's just a regional thing, but I'd definitely say the younger generation has embraced The Doors.  It seems like 1 in 5 college dorms have a poster of Jim Morrison.

I agree with you on The Who.  I'm working on it.

Interesting. To me it seems like bands like The Doors/Who/Hendrix haven't enjoyed the same surge in popularity bands like Floyd/Zeppelin/Beatles have.

You've gotta agree that the Who aren't nearly as popular as those other acts are with today's generation

Yea, but I feel like there's a good reason why those three bands you mentioned as the most popular are in that position, or at least Floyd and Zeppelin. Because they were absolutely amazing. But that's my opinion. I like listening to The Who and Hendrix..etc, but Floyd and Zeppelin are just on another level for me and for a lot of people I feel.

I went to see The Who a few years ago, and there were more people there who were my age than I would ever have expected. A lot of parents had their kids who weren't quite teens yet, too.

Floyd and Zeppelin were indeed on another level; personally I consider them to be better than the Beatles.

Hendrix was brilliant too, but he doesn't have a Dark Side of the Moon so to speak. His first album is classic, and everyone is familiar with it. His second album is more experimentive and brilliant imo; Little Wing is easily one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
