...what gives?

Anyhow, I'm not sure what to make of Apple's lineup.  Everything I'm interested in still comes with some annoying compromise (either it lacks a phone, it lacks storage space, or it comes with a $100/month AT&T bill).  I know I really really want something or other though :lol

I still haven't figured out what the big deal about the new iPod Touch is, other than the price drop.  I don't think I want to carry around something that large, if it isn't also serving as a phone.  The 1st gen refurbished models are a pretty good deal now though.

New nano design is just weird.  I'm annoyed that the black one looks more grey than black.

Well, I think the only thing interesting about the new Zunes, really, was the the info leaked early, and everybody loves a leak.  The new iPods are just round the bored unremarkable.

They did drop the price considerably...still, 32gb is kinda small for my massive music (porn) collection.  I am definitely going to get a 16gb touch....I think they are pretty nice looking.

Prole...do you actually have stations in the Seattle area that play music you would want to tag for later purchase?  I think it is a pretty nice feature for the new Zune as well...but all that stations in my city (town) are of the vanilla variety that play the same shit year after year.

The nano shape is a lot better than the fat nano they'd moved to.

:o

How could this even work?  How would the Zune know what the song was.  It's not like song/artist info are encoded into an FM transmission.

It sounds alot like the newer car radios that have that tell you what song is playing, who's singing it, what station it is on, ect...

That would be HD Radio, and it is not compatible with OG radio.  HD radio is still pircey.  Zunes would be more expensive if that were it.  Also, HD radio uses different radio stations (by the numbers on the dial).

Well, whatever. Microsoft got it to work and it's delicious.

Have you tried this new feature?  Because MS is either saying something not quite honest or they are taking a large price hit on the hardware.

i like the nano design.

@tvc:

you mean this feature?

Interesting.  I had never heard of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System

From some quick googling, seems like this feature will only work in metropolitan areas.

my moms stereo in her car tells her what song is playing and what artist and I'm pretty sure she doesn't get "hd radio".

Yeah, newer regular radios have the ability to pick up station and song info if the station is broadcasting that stuff.  My buddy has a radio that does this and it's not HD radio.

HD radio is (I assume) broadcasted on a different piece of the spectrum (with presumably less interference) and it also allows for a lot more stations.  There are HD versions of a lot of stations around here and they advertize that there are stations up that they run that aren't available on regular radio.

I don't think the audio quality is anything better than cd or even satellite radio but it's probably cleaner than regular radio.  I imagine it sounds like a steady on or off signal like satellite radio.  I'm not sure if it's compressed like satellite is, though.  I've never heard hd radio myself but their proliferation is basically guaranteed now that satellite radio merger requires all satellite radios to be manufactured with hd capability.

So soon all car radios will be hd radios one way or the other.

The new Nanos are a hell of a lot better than last year's.

But, since MS has so much integration with XBL, Zune is still the easy pick.

I do think I am going Zune, though, finally.  To me, Apple dropped the ball by downgrading the iPod Classic.  The 160 gig size was really what was keeping me with Apple.  Also, iPod batteries always seem to go to shit after 1-2 years for me.  Maybe I won't have that problem with Zune.

You may not have that problem. But, Zune software is complete shit. That's the one thing that gives me pause.

I have a 2002 car and it does this, it's not an HD radio.

edit: i see this is resolved lol

I ordered one of the new Nanos.  The next MP3 player I will buy will be a Zune! honest! I need to get out of this Apple trap.

And I really hope I don't have to install itunes again.  The alternative I'm using now works fine with my first gen nano.
