old and/or miserable people of evilbore, i want your opinions
« on: September 10, 2008, 07:39:58 PM »
hypothetically speaking, my boss (who also set me up for the job) depends on me for some projects. but i'm miserable working there and i may be able to get a new job if i quit right away (i'd have to study to take some tests for it). he says i'm indecisive and i guess asking here isn't exactly contradicting him, but i feel like i'd be a backstabbing sob if i left now. i still don't want to stay though.

Give two weeks, do your best to support the transition of current projects to who you can, and if you cannot, bring them to a temporary close and provide enough support paperwork to save them a headache when the projects start up again.

Its your job and your life. They arent your family. If you are miserable at your job either they are doing you wrong, or you will ultimately do them wrong.

This. At the minimum, give a week, but only if the other job really presses it for you to start immediately.

But leave as soon as you can. Life's too short to work a miserable job, and if you're miserable there the quality of you work will degrade with time. Best to leave on a high note than to leave the bitter taste of shitty work in their mouths.

Its in your best interest to not burn bridges, there's no telling how stuff comes back to haunt you in the professional world. Be a professional and people will treat you like one. Its pretty simple.

Agreed 100%.  If you're unhappy at work (and it's not due to your actions) it can affect the rest of your life terribly.  You may not even realise at first why the rest of your life sucks, why relationships go bad, and why nothing you do makes anything better - it can all stem from stress from work.

Not worth it.

Yup. Everyone here already nailed it.

You don't owe him anything, that's why he pays you.

boy let me tell you how true that is

i can't wait to quit my current job and get my life back on track where i don't have to take pills to avoid careening into traffic to avoid going to work that day.

Never burn bridges.
I was busy leaving my job until last week, when suddenly something new came up and my current boss offered me a HUGE opportunity.

If I listened to other people I would be currently without a job and hunting for a much crappier job.
Now I get two weeks of vacation and a cool job abroad when I get back.

But also, be a man, make the choices that benefit you in the long run, you can never please everybody.

well, i left some details out in the op, hence "hypotetically speaking". either way, we were going to start the project in the upcoming weeks, which was also why i wanted to bail out now. i spoke to him today and he gave me some good advice, so it turned out better than what i expected. i was mostly worried about him seeing it as me being ungrateful or something.

anyway, thanks for the advice dudes.
