downloading on a network
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:35:00 AM »
Right now I've got two pc's running, one running vista and another handling my torrents running xp.  The one running my torrents is also running Peer Guardian.  Since the two pc's are using the same internet connection and the same router, are the pc's trying to port-scan the xp pc going to be able to see/port-scan the other pc running vista, even though it's not downloading?

Is this not safe?

torrents can never "really" be safe because your forming direct connections with other PCs.  Peer Guardian is "ok" but but really ineffectual.  If you're using bit torrent, I'd suggest encrypting your traffic (google how to do this using your current client) and accepting connections only from other people whose traffic is also encrypted.

Vuze (previously Azureus) allows you to do this fairly simply.
