Need TV halp. Plasma or LCD?
« on: September 11, 2008, 10:00:08 PM »
We're looking to get a new TV for the move seeing as our current one is a tube one and is heavy as balls (it's HD but soooo heavy).  Was just wondering which brand I should get and whether it should be Plasma or LCD.  We can't afford don't need any uber huge awesome ones but maybe something in the 36-42" range.  Tauntaun gives you his thanks.

Go to PC Richards. I nabbed 42" Samsung Plasma for a flat 1k, no interest for 12 months. I prefer it over the 42" LCD I had owned previously.

I'd go for a plasma unless you're going to be using it for a PC monitor and displaying static imagery for days (in which case LCD is pretty much your only choice).

Pioneer are the best but they're expensive.  If that's outside your price range look at Panasonic and Samsung (LG might be OK too, but I'm not very familiar with their plasmas).  Go to the store and look at both and see if there's any traits you like or hate.  Bear in mind colour, sharpness and contrast are probably set to stupid levels - you can adjust them but even with them set standard you'll still get an idea if there's traits of certain pictures you hate (look at plenty of moving images, look at colour gradients, look at people's faces, that sort of thing).

IMO, the quality of screens nowadays is shit so I wouldn't buy one without a five year warranty (even then, if they develop a problem the manufacturers sometimes like to play the "no, that's within spec" game).  But anyway, that's a personal opinion.

P.C. Richard has the Panasonic 42PZ85U on sale for $1149. It's a pretty damn good 42" 1080p HDTV, and that's cheaper than I've seen it anywhere. I'm pretty much right on the fence about buying it. I just won't have much time to enjoy it over the next couple of months, so I'm not sure if I'm going to pull the trigger just yet.

I've owned both plasmas and LCDs, and imo, plasma definitely has the better image quality.  But if you're going to be using the TV in a brightly lit room, LCD might be a better choice because LCDS have far less glare than plasmas.  Glare is pretty much the only thing that I dislike about plasmas.  Don't worry about burn-in.  I played plenty of games on my plasmas and I've never noticed any burn-in.  You just need to make sure the TV is properly broken in, during the first 100 hours, before gaming on it.

Yeah, that's what the experts at AVforums recommend.  It's really not that long since I just kept it running at night.

100 hours only watching fulscreen stuff with no static images on the screen. Or rplay one of those break-in dvds for 100 hours. I heard that this isn't all that necessary with Pioneer plasmas though.

Pioneers ain't cheap, though, Beezy.  Samsung's and Panasonic's plasmas are reasonably priced.  Does Sony even make plasmas?  I loved Sony Trinitron TVs back in the SNES/Genny days.

I know Pioneers aren't, but they're in a whole different league from most hdtvs period. Samsung and Panasonic plasmas are cheaper than LCDs. Only these 3 and Vizio make plasmas I think.

I quite literally played nothing BUT games on my Plasma with no ill effects.

You just made me spit water onto the monitor from laughing so hard!

BTW, Taun, I have seen a Panasonic Plasma, 1080p 42" for $1000 at Best Buy. This is the one that Cajole is talking about, my brother has the TV and it's excellent.

For me it's: Good plasma > LCD > Bad Plasma

Especially if you are using it for low-res content. Even Wii doesn't look that ass on a plasma. And the Pioneer plasmas have special screens that nullify glare... glare isn't too bad on my PDP-4270HD.

I'm an LCD believer.

I have a Samsung A650 and I just love it. Really deep blacks, very little motion blur, not a single complaint.

Sweet, the wife and I are gonna stop by Best Buy soon and take a look at what they got, I'll keep an eye out for that one.  Whoever said they're gonna have some sick sales this winter are probably right, maybe we'll wait until black friday, maybe not.  :-*  Thanks for all your help guys I appreciate it.

You might see it for like $1200 instead, but that's still cheaper than a 42" lcd.

When the hell did you see it for $1000 at Best Buy? And that might be the 42PZ80U, which is pretty much the same thing as the 42PZ85U, but with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio instead of 30,000:1. Even then, I haven't seen it for $1000 at Best Buy.

Yeah, I think it may be the Z80U, I am not sure of the specifics... about a month ago, Best Buy had a sale on certain Plasmas and my brother bought his for $1000, I think he might have also had a coupon from Best Buy rewards that probably took a bit off too.

Ok, with a 12% off coupon, he definitely could've gotten it for $1000. Nice.

I went to the bank and paid off some credit card debt so I can buy this 32" Samsung television.
