Ok I got a Saturn, what do I do with it
« on: September 12, 2008, 10:41:35 PM »
It was $20 in real good condition with two pads and 3 games. Is there a freeloader I buy which will allow me to burn, download and play games? I really want to check out Radiant Silvergun, and I hear Panzer Dragoon Saga is decent too. What other games are worth checking out?

Yeah, I just looked it up.  It uses an easier version of the PS1 swap trick.

Play Galactic Attack (aka Layer Section). You should be able to get a US copy of it for under ten bones. It's one of the best shooters on the system.

If you're gonna download stuff, try Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Battle Garegga, Thunder Force V, Keio Yugekitai, Cotton 2, Elevator Action Returns, and Purikura Daisakusen.  If you want an RPG, try Shining in the Darkness.  If you don't mind muddling through some Japanese, try Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari. It's a sidescrolller that plays like an adventure game and has some incredible storybook-style art.

This guy seems to have modchips available: http://www.racketboy.com/saturn-modchip/index.htm

It looks like a modchip isnt even necessary, I just need to power up the laser, and Ive got a program that can change .iso and .bin files to my region

I just bought PDS, cost me $200, but haven't played it yet  :o

That Purikura Daisakusen game jiji mentioned... never even heard of it before. Did some searching and found an article on HG101 about it, it looks really cool, but I can't find it on ebay :(

Also check out Magic Knight Rayearth, the Langrisser games (if you can read Japanese), Tengai Makyo IV (ditto... there's a great walkthrough available out there, it's an awesome RPG), Guardian Heroes, and definitely Layer Section/Galactic Attack. And oh yes, NiGHTS.

Anyone have any links to this stuff? I always was under the impression that modding the Saturn was damn near impossible.

All the ebay "buy it now" listings routinely sit between $250 to $300. Considering it's super-distinguished mentally-challenged low print run, $200 doesn't seem that crazy.

Marvel VS. Capcom was a Dreamcast game. Were you thinking of X-Men VS. Street Fighter?

I mean I havent tested this yet but it seems this trick combined with the region patch I got for .iso's sould allow me to play anything (anything dl'ed anyway)

If I was more financial right now I would go over to Play Asia and pick some suff up, but Im a dirty temping poor (still  :'()

The Action Replay only lets you play imports, it won't play CD-Rs, fyi.

yeah I figured that... well Ive made some progress, the Saturn can actually read the audio tracks off the Radiant Silvergun CDR I burned, but it cant recognise the disc as an actual game. Im guessing the action replay can remedy this?

I'm pretty sure it's a no. I've been out of the loop on that stuff for a long time, but I'm 90% sure the only way to play backups on a Saturn (aside from the trick mentioned in this thread) is a modchip. I gave up looking a while back. :'(

Just download a Saturn emulator, you can play all the imports and ISOs you want with that.

Looks to me like that adjustment trick is just so you can use CD-RW media on a Saturn that's already modded.  So, either get a modchip, or get an Action Replay/4-in-1 cart and start buying games (Japanese releases are generally cheaper).

Try the swap trick and see if that works on the unmodded Saturn.  I remember the days when I needed to do that shit every time I wanted to play my imports and it got incredibly annoying.

SSF is pretty good. It's been about two years since I've messed with it, but most games were playable at the time. I beat Panzer Dragoon Saga on it, which was running at pretty close to full-speed with occasional slow down. Radiant Silvergun was still too slow to play; Shining Force 3 was kinda slow too but it wasn't that big of a deal for that game.

The Saturn swap trick is a total hassle. Even then you have to have a specific type of Saturn for it to work, right?

The bunch of fighting games it has on it are pretty great, but getting a modded Xbox + FBA pretty much kills every port on the Saturn.

Import these two game now.
Street Fighter Zero 3
Xmen vs Street Fighter

I plugged my Saturn in this weekend and played these two.  Games like these make me wonder how the saturn failed at the time, getting arcade perfect ports weren't easy in those days.  Not to mention the Saturn pad is the greatest pad to this day for fighting games.  Saturn 2D holds up much better than Playstation 3D too oh it's true.

Swap trick is no hassle.

The video made it seem like the same order as on the PS1, so I think first the burnt/import game, then at one point swap for a real game, then back to the import game.

how do you do the swap trick then?

Which Ramcart Converter do you have?  I have the 4mb ram and an ST Converter.  For me it is like this...

With the converter in the system I power up with the imported game.  As soon as you see the "Sega" Logo swap the converter with the ram cart.  You have to do it within 5-6 seconds.  In other words make sure you have completed the swap after the "Sega" logo but before the "Capcom" logo pops up.

I've got an action replay and a 4mb ram

So does this swap trick work on backups? I'd like to play Dragon Force and other rare Saturn games.

Huh.

I never tried the Saturn swap trick, but unless something is really different from the PS1 swap trick, you can still play backups with it.

Saturn import scene is ridiculous.  Paying $85 for SFZ3 or Radiant Silvergun is insane.  I think I saw a copy of Final Fight Revenge for well over $100, along with PDZ.

In fact, if the game costs more than $15, don't buy it, burn it.
