Detroit Metal City is a gag comic from Japan about a college graduate who dreams of hitting it big as a musician. He wants to play down-to-earth love songs, but instead has somehow been roped into becoming the frontman for a hardcore metal band who wears costumes and heavy make-up, giving them a modern-day KISS-like appearance (Gene Simmons is in the live-action movie, as a matter of fact!). Their songs consists of lyrics like "kill everyone," "rape rape rape rape rape," and of course "I killed my parents and then raped them." You get the picture. Anyway, the story follows this singer and his dual lifestyle; the guy is a total pussy but somehow can transform himself into this satanic-psychotic-sicko when on stage, and all the wackiness that follows dealing with his double identity.. It's side-splitting stuff, and recommended for EVERYONE, whether you typically like anime or not. It is not conventional by any means. The episodes are only 12 minutes long, so it's quick viewing.

My favorite secondary character is the band's manager; a blonde-haired woman who routinely adds "shit" and "fuck" to end of every sentence and bases good or bad music on how wet she gets when she hears it. Definitely one for the kids!

The Anime is amazing and I can hopefully see the movie one day. I thought about checking out the manga, but the voices and music help so much with the other two.

Yeah, I flipped through the comic briefly at a bookstore, but the lack of furigana made it hard to follow. Still, it looked funny and then I saw the anime...and it was laffs laffs LAFFS!

Generally I tend to prefer the original manga versions to their anime adaptions, but I think this may follow Azumanga Daioh as one of the few times where it just works better in animated form, this time because of the audio like you said.

I read that some Hollywood studios are already making offers to remake the movie in English.

Already watching it. I liked the part when the cop was trying to arrest him, and he accidentally tripped and knocked the cop down and all his fans are like "OH YEAH, HE FUCKING TOOK THAT COP OUT!" and then the female cop grabs him and he falls on top of her and they're like "OH YEAH, HE'S RAPING HER IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!"

Saw the movie tonight! Good stuff, but I definitely like the anime version much more. The gags work better, plus being a movie they felt the need to add some sappy shit to the story to make it more "movie-like." The actors all did awesome jobs playing the characters though. The main guy NAILED it, but at times his reactions seemed too "animu" and cheesy. Guess that's what they wanted though since only he was reacting like that.

I only said this in the OP. :'(

He has a very small cameo in the movie as the world's dominant metal singer, ultra-violent and his hit song is "Fuckingham Palace," in which the lyrics are "FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK" and can be heard in the trailer.

If you search Youtube, you can find him talking about how easy the cameo was to do; almost comes off like he is talking down to the entire cast, LOL.

Episode 5 is from a different subber, and the subs are not hard-coded in. I have been having a problem with VLC where the subs are HUGE and overlap each other in almost every anime with soft subs. How can I fix this?

The entire series is already out on DVD here, too. I saw a box set yesterday and wanted to buy it immediately but the wife shot that down. :'(

The Kinokuniya here in Seattle has a big store display set up for Detroit Metal City right now. They have trailers for the anime and movie running on a flat screen TV, and they've got the manga and anime DVDs for sale below it. I found it really funny hearing "fuck fuck fuck" over and over while walking around the store next to families with their small children.

Haha, just like it is here. There is this massive three-story bookstore in Kanazawa, and on the third floor near the girls' comics, a TV is a CRANKED and is BLASTING "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck DETROIT...METAL...CITY" over and over again.

Actually it's kind of surprising all of the raws aren't out there. The entire anime series has been released on DVD already. I am incredibly tempted to buy the set, even though it's like 14,000 yen.

There are a few CDs out but they are movie-related. This series doesn't have any recognition outside of Japan yet so I wouldn't expect it to be too popular. If it really is being remade into a Hollywood film that should change quickly!

I'll check up on it. I don't know when the anime series came out, but like I said before the whole thing is on DVD, so there should be a soundtrack out there too. The manga series is two years old already, although the sixth volume only recently came out. The creator moves so slow I guess.

I'm probably never going to touch the manga. The music is too good to be missed out on and I never had this problem with other music based manga like Nodame and Beck.

Kinokuniya gets everything the same day it comes out in Japan, and they have a very large music section. It's either sold out or I didn't look hard enough.
