The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection

Quote
The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection spans the years of 1929-1938. This collections contains all 80 of the original Little Rascals theatrical talkies in their entirety; fully Remastered, Restored and Uncut. This amazing 8-disc set contains a collectible booklet, loads of nostalgic bonus footage, photos and much more!

There's also a bonus disc containing:

Quote
Three Silents:
Dog Heaven (1927) - Commentary by Richard Ward
Spook Spoofing (1928) - Commentary by Richard Ward
Barnum & Ringling, Inc. (1928)
The Story of Hal Roach and Our Gang
Rascals and Racial Issues
Catching Up With The Rascals - this feature contains
the following:
Catching Up with the Rascals: Dickie Moore
Catching Up with the Rascals: Jean Darling
Catching Up with the Rascals: Jerry Tucker
Catching Up with the Rascals: Annie Ross
Memories of Spanky (with Rick Sapphire

It's not "complete" (there are a bunch of the 1922-1929 silent shorts available on bootleg DVDs, and MGM bought the rights and continued the series through 1944 - but the MGM shorts are uniformly preachy and terrible), but this is the pretty much the cream of the crop.   You can get the series on bootlegs (and I have), but they're almost always recorded from TV broadcasts and are edited versions, low-quality.

Every Little Rascals short from 1929-1938 for $55 in remastered, unedited form is a pretty good deal.

Holy shit. This may be the find of the decade, Eel. Thank you! A friend had the last "complete" set on VHS, which we damn near wore out.

EDIT: Wow, I didn't realize just how many DVD's were already out. I've never seen any in stores.

When MGM took over the series in 1938, the shorts went from "two-reelers" (20 minutes) to "one-reelers" (ten minutes).  At the same time, the most famous kids were getting too old to stay in the series (Spanky was 14 when he left the series, still wearing that beanie hat) and were replaced by lesser talents like Mickey (better known as Robert "Barretta" Blake) and Froggy, most of the better writers and directors had stayed with Hal Roach or moved on to other things, budgets for short features were being slashed to nothing with every passing year (which is why you'll see a lot of later Three Stooges shorts using the same footage over and over) and the country was gearing up for war.  Basically, the decision was made at the studio that every Little Rascals short had to have some kind of moral or lesson tacked on - bullshit like "look both ways before you cross the road," "kids are starving around the world so quit whining about hash for dinner," "don't be afraid of the dentist," "don't play hooky from school," etc.  Just fucking awful, and the kids all look miserable.
